    Even root wouldn't be able to get access.

    I very much doubt that. root can su to that user, access the partition with a filesystem debugger, dump the partition and pick it apart manualy, mess with system memory, etc. The first rule of *nix is: root is god.

    I was talking about modern *nixs but yes, older *nix operating systems will work on the older, lower spec hardware

    Well, as long as it's faster then my hard drive, and can push fullscreen video at decent quality, it's fast enough. At least untill we switch to holographic displays. Then again, I'm on a very small LAN (4 computers)

    IIRC *nix needs at least a couple megs of ram (4 or 8, I forget which) to boot.

    I got billed for 6 months of DSL from pacbell before I got a refund. I ordered it, then moved before it was installed, because one of my cats peed on a pile of clothing sitting on top of the junction of two extention cords, and causing a nasty fire. It never got installed, but it did show up on the bill.

    Under both Windows (Motherboard Moniter) and linux (lm_sensors) software exisits that can moniter the built in thermal and fan sensors that most modern motherboards have, and can be configured to shut down your computer when it overheats or a fan fails.

    The Alternative Universe is really quite a nice place, they are constantly having specials, and my buddies and I often go over there, and rent half a series to watch durnig the weekend. They have a HUGE VHS (mostly subbed) anime collection, and a good assortment of non-anime DVDs. Thier 7pm return deadline also makes it easier to get things in on time. Anyway, if you live in Davis or the sorounding area, they're definatly worth checking out.

    The linuxcare CD is 50 MB, as is lnx-bbc. They fit on Business card CDRs.

    My cd burner 'requires' windows, but works fine in linux. All the 'requirements' means is that they only provide windows drivers.

    Yeah, but it's not on thier forehead, or (where on the hand was it?) yet... But when this ID becomes biometricly based.... Not that I care, I think christianity is a bunch of rubish, but would enjoy very much the results of churches telling thier followers that Microsoft's secure ID codes are the mark of the beast.
