Also, you, I and likely everyone else on /. put stuff in our mouths in a time when we were so young we don't remember what these things were (but our mothers tell us, usually at the most inopportune times) These things, for the amusement value vs. the hazard value are understandable. I disagree. The optimal amount of screen space just fills my field of vision. Add any more, and spacial memory starts to work less well. I spent a while working with dual 30" monitors, and it was really easy to lose windows and have to spend some time finding them. A 27" display seems about right, maybe slightly small, but it's possible to put it where you don't need to turn your head to see everything.

27 inch is a very good screen size. I think my eyes would recede into my skull if I had anything wider to look at. Great for side-by-side comparisons or doing some transposition of code, but don't need to see more than 2 windows at a time (in most cases).

You're a couple decades late there. Remember the Addams Family movies? Brady Bunch? Bewitched? Hell, they even did a Car 54 movie.

Hollywood is practically run by bean-counters and Wall Street now.

There was never a time when it wasn't.

Go back to the 40s, 50s and 60s and you had studios taking considerable risks, many moguls ran the industry and studios were privately held or few people held large enough share blocs to ensure business was done the way they wanted. There were contract actors and actresses and merchandising was a rare thing. High profile pictures were rolled out, some of the greatest cinematic endeavours lost money or just broke even.

Now it's rubbish, cut-n-paste jokes, bland dialogue, suspense removed (or toned down) because it requires too much thought from the audience, and special effects are more important than a script which is even remotely plausible (even in a Super Hero inhabited world.) They've mocked and screwed around with the 60s and 70s, but they can just as quickly go back for more, and I suspect they have some in the works.

Meanwhile, where's Rendezvous With Rama? Morgan Freeman has recovered, but he's getting seriously on in years and it may never happen. :(

A college prof of mine, who was still a practicing attorney, pointed out that 99% of all law is based upon common sense. Not a load of fiddly technical things forced upon a people by their government, but sensible stuff so we can all get along. The Ten Commandments were same thing, when you think about it - don't steal, don't lie, don't covet stuff that isn't yours and you'll get along much better with the neighbors.

Disappointing how we seem to have a society (including businesses) which treats laws as a way to hurt each other or gain some sort of advantage (I have a patent on breathing, if you breathe without paying me, I'll sue!) sort of behaviour.

The Super Hero genre has got very, very old for me. I'm not interested in seeing any more, reboot or otherwise. I once spent about half my disposable (after rent, food, and expenses) income on movies, but find Hollywoods desire to hedge on known quantities (sequels, copy-what's-popular, rehash/remake) is killing the creative content. Scads of great books would make for some awesome movies, I certainly have at least one in mind, but Hollywood is practically run by bean-counters and Wall Street now.

It takes someone with finances or clout (like Spielberg) to do something they want to (and alas, Spielberg's War of the Worlds fell far short of what it could have been) so I don't hold out much hope. Now if I want to see a good flick I spend more of my movie & popcorn money on indie and foreign cinema, some people are still creating and I should reward them with my dollar votes rather than the garbage recyclers Hollywood have become.

Reminds me of squabbles by rich people in my old home town, fighting over every little stupid perceived slight or whatever, driving their El Dorados over each others lawns, etc. Judge had enough and forced them to sort out who owned what by a court appointed mediator. Judge was furious this family tied up the courts rather than settle things among themselves. Court should be last resort, not first. But I don't suppose you're going to hear legal counsel say that, unless they are company lawyers who would rather be doing something other then fighting in court all the time.
