  1. MS vs Sony on Sony Discusses Plans for the Playstation 3 · · Score: 2

With the PlayStation 3, Sony hopes to merge content from its other divisions, such as Sony pictures and Sony music, by establishing a direct chain of distribution and by having the PlayStation 3 serve as the platform hub. Additionally, Sony's plans for the PS3 include online shopping functions, online banking, and other interactive Internet services. Naturally, some of these functions could be introduced to the mass market with the PlayStation 2, but Sony's digital convergence plans for the PS3 seem to be on a larger scale.

Here is how i see the future of console wars: short supply of PS2s until the 2001 Xmas season leads to low PS2 sales in the US market. Sony beefs up the production to meet the Xmas projections, but by that time MS ships a bit delayed Xbox in volume. MS marketing gives the perception to US consumers that their console is the newest, the most powerful and has the most games. Majority of consoles bought during Xmas 2001 are MS Xbox. Sony and Nintendo sell mostly to niche markets resulting in huge inventory problems.

To get back on the top Sony begins to hype up PS3 as a replacement for your PCs and internet appliances. In retialation MS begins to ship internet access, home productiving and other home user software for Xbox. With a huge installed base, MS again is capable of leveraging itself into another market. What we now know as a PC becomes replaced with MS branded consoles, with MS controlling the software, components and i/o devices.

  2. Immune systems on Researchers Find Off Protein For Immune System · · Score: 2

The article fails to mention an intersting point. The immune systems is connected to the brain via a system of chemical messengers. The "miracle" stories of cancer patients diagnosed as terminally ill and then recovering in a year are often given as examples of mind-over-body quality of human organism.

CD45 actually works on the cell side of the immune systems, causing cell death when receiving a certain chemical messenger. Locating CD45 only helps scientists to know which genetic switch to target, but finding the brain's chemical messenger that turns CD45 on or off will actually lead to the cure to cancel.

  4. E-Books on Underground Surfaces · · Score: 4

In light of this book, it annoys me to see Barnes and Noble and Amazon charging ridiculous amounts of money for Glassreader and MSReader books. If the book is $20 in hardcover and I am supposed to pay around $300 for the device, I better see some serious discounting on the ebook. Marketing and author's royalties aside, the cost of making the hardcover version of book has to be significant, otherwise why would they run paperback versions at $7.

Neither XSL and particulary not data binding are Microsoft only. XSL has been in development for ages by W3C and the official MS BS on the topic is the borrow and extend approach to the standard. Data binding is a concept that can be implemented under any programming environment, Microsoft or not.

  7. Actually its the city's problem on MS To Virginia Beach: Prove You Own Your Software · · Score: 1

From the point of view of an accountant, I would say if it is an issue for the city to provide an accurate count of their M$ software licenses its their problem. Software is an asset just like anything else: tables, chairs, sheets of paper. If the city's accounting department doesn't keep accurate track of their assets it is damaging to public that has a right to know where are their taxes spent. Particularily because we are talking about ridiculously expensive Microsoft software.

So if the city says that they would need to shutdown all their operations to do this project, I'd say they are just stonewalling and trying to appeal to public to force Microsoft to bend under the pressure of people pissed that they can't get their building permit approved.

Entangled particle does exhibit distance independent behavior, but it doesn't actually break the speed of light in classical terms. To exceed the lightspeed you would need to send mass or information at velocities exceeding c, but entagled particles do not do that. What actually happens is that when you find out the state of one of the particles, the other one becomes set to the same state. Since there is no way to find out the state of the particle in advance, no infomation is transmitted.

  10. I think its a great article for Linux community on Fred Moody Says Linux Worst Operating System Ever · · Score: 1

Reading this article is like putting a mirror to the worst aspects of the Linux community. Think about all the times Linux is blindly praised just for its flawless reliability without taking into consideration spectrum of other issues. There is a disturbuting amount of people who appear to take pride in pointing out a single detail about Linux and then claim that it is that detail that makes it the best OS ever. Next time before YOU say something in defense of Linux remember: "DON"T BE FRED MOODY"!!! I believe that being objective is the best response to these myopic statements.
