  1. of course we can only observe one planet on New Planetary Systems Stun Astronomers · · Score: 1
Of more than 1,000 stars observed, over 50, all relatively nearby Earth, have so far been found to be accompanied by single planets.

planets are observed by the "wobble" they cause in the star they orbit. small planets don't cause enough wobble to be observed. astronomers in a distant system would only see the wobble in the sun caused by jupiter. that doesn't mean jupiter is the only planet in orbit around the sun.

it makes sense that we would only be able to observer one planet in most distant systems, that certainly doesn't mean that most systems only have one planet!

  3. I work for the DOD and.... on Linux -- Government Acceptance vs. Actual Use · · Score: 2
I work for the DOD and let me tell you the real reason why we don't use Linux.

The federal government can't afford to pay compeditive rates to IT professionals. So, they pay lower rates to second-rate employees. These employees aren't smart enough to learn Linux yet. Perhaps in a couple years when Linux is easier to use, the DOD will adopt it.

I personally tried to get my section to convert our web server to Linux, but we're sticking with NT because that's what our people know.

In case you're wondering, I'm planning on quitting once I graduate. Until then, it's good experience and looks good on a resume.

The rich DO control the entire government. They buy candidates with "campaign contributions". The same special intirest groups are funding both parties, so nomatter who wins, the president does what he's told when he gets a call from Phillip Morris.

  5. Hopefully this will shake things up on Voteauction.com · · Score: 1

Maybe if this gets enough press, people will finally pay attention to how corrupt the entire system is. Special interest groups buy candidates, and money rules the country. We can't beat this system the old fasioned way, with correct principals. People with principals don't have money. No decent laws about campaign finance reform are going to get passed, because all the politicans who would pass them are bought out by the intirest groups. Soooo, if yah can't beat 'em, join 'em! If all the american voters join the corruption, and we all sell our votes to the highest bidder, then the people will benefit from our dolarocracy. Or maybe the majority will realize just how corrupt everything is, and the masses will do something to stop this whole special intirest group thing. In the long run, if no one does anything about the corruption of the system, no one will call it a democracy. Maybe we'll end up with a whole new system. I like the idea from "Starship Troopers" about maintaining a difference between citizens and civilians...

the world would be a much better place without the promotion. we wouldn't have crappy artists like britney spears dimonating the airwaves. people would listen to music based on the talent of the artist, not the spending habits of their distributor. and we can't "take our business elsewhere" because the RIAA has a monopoly, the same way that Microsoft does. sites like fairtunes are all about destroying that monopoly. the sooner the RIAA caeses to exist, the better off we all will be.
