    You would have to have something, or be entirely isolated from the world.
    You would be alive, but your *quality* of life would be another matter.


    How about a neuron-Ethernet bridge? Connect to a dedicated server for providing basic senses, with microphone, speakers, webcam, and 'Net access.

    Sure, I'd miss the taste of a medium-rare sirloin from a rusted-out Weber grill in mid-Autumn, but as long as I could get on /., UF, Sluggy Freelance, eBay, my PayPal account, as well as having human communication through the audio subsystem, I'd be just fine.

    Exchange can play nicely with other mail programs, as it supports POP and IMAP with no trouble.

    Well, not much trouble. :) I use Staroffice 5.2's IMAP client to connect to our Exchange server -- it works well, and you don't have to worry about them nasty Outhous^H^H^H^Hlook virii.

    Mind you, the server is a Dual Xeon with 512MB RAM, Gig-Ethernet, and bunches of LVD SCSI drives in RAID-5. It's just barely enough to handle Exchange. :)

    And fwiw, $1 million bond is hardly unheard of.

    The only time I'd ever figure such bail being put on for misdemeanors would be if the accused was a foreigner with risk of flight. Even so, most judiciaries are not too caring about misdemeanors (though I can't speak for the judges on the right side of the state...)

    If you disapprove of gene patents, then contact your congresswoman and demand they be excised from patent law.

    Not gonna work -- my congresswoman-elect's pockets were lined by pharmaceuticals & insurance companies. They have more money, so they have a louder megaphone than I do (a lowly SysAdmin at an underfunded department in a medium-sized university who does little but read & post on /. all day.)

    But, getting back on topic.

    If a company was to create a completely new gene, even out of an existing one, they *should* have the right to patent the brand new gene.

    Problem is, the pharmaceuticals will make everyone pay out the a$$ for the rights to the gene...
    ...and when someone reverse-engineers the gene, creates it another way, and posts the processes necessary on the 'Net, the pharmaceuticals will sue the creators under the DMCA.

    Just another scenario, my fellow /.ers, of the Possible Abuses of Government & Industry(TM).

    How is Napster different then an auction service that is only based on how much you like a song, not how much you want to pay for it?

    In the eyes of the RIAA, if you like a song, you must pay for it.

    Their problem with Napster is that The Labels are not profiting from people's taste in music.

    Or maybe I'm just being cynical...or just sick of having them cram bad music by surgically-altered Barbie & Ken doll-look-alikes down my throat.

    I'm surprised the RIAA isn't suing eBay here, as they probably could have won (more lawyer$.)

    In what district is the Napster case being decided? In what district will this eBay case be appealed (cuz we know it will)?

    East Coast, West Coast. Two different circuit courts, two completely different mindsets in the respective judiciaries.

    Two rulings on very similar cases that contradict each other: that's one of the tickets for Supreme Court review.

    Might this turn out to be a bad thing?

    I'm surprised the MPAA/RIAA aren't lobbying for whomever-the-next-Prez-is to appoint corporate-friendly SCotUS Justices, to forever ban Napster, Gnutella, DeCSS, linking to whatever we feel like, etc.

    Metric countries often have metric sports --Aussie Rules Football uses meters (as far as I've ever seen it), ditto most Rugby & Soccer.

    American & Canadian Football. Yards. 'Nuff said.

    Baseball. Those numbers on the outfield wall? Feet. Except in Toronto & Montreal where they have smaller numbers underneath in meters.

    Boxing. I have a hard time picturing Michael Buffer calling out: "In this corner, standing 191 cm tall, weighing in at 103.2 kilos*...."

    Whenever I hear Pat Summerall & John Madden say something like "...and Brett Favre is sacked for an 8 meter loss", then the US will be officially be metric.

    * - In America, a "kilo" is a measurement of illegal drugs. :)

    Around my old college, the familiar mantra is "I learned more from working at the Help Desk than I did in 4 years of CS/CIS."

    Sadly, I had to agree.

    And as I've seen recently, the recent crop of freshmen at my old place have the odd idea that they're doing coding and that's it. The department also had the bright idea to cut out a ton of the necessary math & physics from CS (1 term of Discrete Math instead of 2, 1 term of Physics instead of 2) and putting less emphasis on analysis.

    Don't even get me started on the CIS major -- programming + accounting + bizadmin + economics.

    This is just pissing on what would otherwise be a fun event for the majority of the school. Most people enjoy the Homecoming experience -- that's why they have it. I wasn't elected King in my class, but I still had a crapload of fun.

    You must live in that rare community where the parents haven't made such a f*cking big deal over stupid shit like a popularity contest and football game, and the athletes/cheerleaders don't let their popularity go to their heads.

    Sorry to sound so bitter, but I'd seen too much of the Abuses Of The Popular And Powerful at my high school to keep me pissed for several years. And I've been out of HS for 5 years...

    Apparently there was a joke movement to get *ME* of all people to be homecoming king (started by The Assimilators For The In-Crowd). It sprouted into a real effort. Luckily, I was able to decline all nominations. The HC king ended up being the starting TE of the football team. Figures.

    Actually, I'm in Pennsylvania :)

    I never said anything about Income Tax...that I rule as a necessary evil.

    You say that the EC is a buffer between stupid people and policy makers -- but what better way for policy makers to keep their old two-party system afloat, as long as they keep those same two parties in control of the House as a fallback measure.

    Let's say a nice amount of non-Dem/Rep Congress{wo|}men get elected, such that neither the Dems or Reps get a majority (it wouldn't be that hard, either.) And then say that no presidential candidate gets an electoral majority. Party politics as it is, when it reaches the House, no candidate will *ever* get a majority. Thus the entire electoral process is exposed for the sham that it is.

    Unlikely, you say? Congresspeople are elected by popular vote -- if third party candidates are popular enough, they get votes!

    Maybe there's a few disgruntled Reps/Dems who'd be willing to defect to Libertarian/Green/Reform/etc...we can only hope...

    Not in Ohio they aren't. Thousands of border-dwellers on the Ohio side buy their clothing on the No-Tax-On-Necessary-Clothing PA side.

    My 2: Penguin Mints should be re-classified as "pharmaceutical/non-prescription" and thus tax-free. :)

    Now that I'm thoroughly off-topic...
    If it wasn't for Gore, I'd be voting straight Democrat this year (Ron Klink for US Senate, Terry Van Horne for Congress (PA 4th district), and my incumbent PA state senator and rep), as I've done in '96 and '98. Why am I not voting for Gore?
    Because there are better candidates out there. Nader and Hagelin for two, probably others.

    And now for the real reason voting for anyone other than Bush'n'Gore (which sounds like a Porno Snuff film) is a wasted vote...The Electoral College.

    We know that it's going to be a damn close election, electoral-vote-wise. Let's assume that Nader gets lucky and wins one or two states, thus causing nobody to have an electoral majority. Then the next President will be chosen by the CURRENT House of Representatives. Which means Bush will win, since the Republicans control the House (two-party politics strikes again.)

    Once the Electoral College is abolished like the anachronism it is (along with the Patent Office and the x86 instruction set :), only then will the non-Democlicans/Republicrats have a sporting chance to become President.

    Of course, some idiot will decide that it'd be best to choose Venus' atmosphere so that the additional CO2 and SO2 introduced will compensate for the amount not produced by Internal Combustion Engined-vehicles.

    And now, my 2:
    I live in Pittsburgh. Vehicles carrying tanks of flammable gases (not all gases, but most of them) are prohibited in any of our four or five* tunnels (three of which are on major thoroughfares). Would that mean I'd have to drive for an additional 15 minutes around them? If I were to drive such a car through the tunnel and get stopped, would I be cited and have my car repo'd?

    * - Offtopic sidenote: The Wabash Tunnel will be reopening soon as an HOV/Bus-only thruway, for yunz 'Burgh geeks who carpool dahntahn. Which if they lifted the flammability provision and got one of these cars, you could go from Carnegie to Dahntahn in less than 5 minutes!

    They have the ability to LOCALly block "the porn and pro-marijuana sites." This wouldn't shut the sites down, it would just prevent access.

    Then feed it through a text filter (e.g. Jar-Jargonizer, Lamer-speak, even Babelfish). I highly doubt that Cybernanny or Netwatcher et.al. would be able to block those types of sites out.

    Even better idea -- feed some random page with a questionable URL through a ROT13 filter. See if any blockers try to un-ROT13 it and therefore block it. Claim they're using an unauthorized decryption routine and sue them under the DMCA. :)

    Politicians are always ranting about the World Wide Web...problem is, they forget the first two words..."WORLD WIDE".

    For some reason, they don't realize that a ton of pr0n sites (and some of the best ones, in my book :), as well as many gambling sites, radicals, "How to make a nuclear weapon", etc., are located OUTSIDE the US.

    For example...

    US Government: "Hey, Holland! Shut down all the porn and pro-marijuana sites that end in .nl!"
    Dutch: "You're fooking kidding, right?"

    The US has no jurisdiction over overseas sites, and better not try to pull any stunts to usurp power to do so ("Pull thehun.net or no more automobiles for you!")
