    but we didn't know the excruciatingly bad details. I was really hopeful that this movie would make the other two seem worthwhile. Or at least, worth sitting through. Judging from the script... Well, I don't think so.

    No one forces them to use the campus network. They are more than welcome to pay for their own connection to the Internet.

    I don't agree.

    Bad things happen to everyday people, it's true. Who's responsible? I say it's the computer owner. Who's responsible for the network? Again, who owns it? I don't expect that someone who isn't a CS major will know all that - but they still have an obligation to compute responsibly. If some malicious wanker breaks my windshield, and a cop stops me and gives me a ticket for it, I garuntee you that the judge isn't going to let me off when I say, "But it's not my fault!" It's my car - it's my responsibility to either fix it, or have it fixed.

    Unplug them, clean up the machine (which would include all bots and trojans, and you'll note that I did cover this by saying spyware software was also necessary - and that DOES find those things) and then once it's back to normal, let them back onto the network.

    Because of the conservative element in that state. None of what you mentioned is as important as the court system there. I work for a rather large Chicago law firm - I wasn't just taking a cheap shot at my neighbor.

    How? Who are the conspirators in this 'scheme'? If I had to file a suit of this nature anywhere, Indiana is a good choice (trust me). But still - it just seems plainly rediculous on it's face.

    What OS is this we're talking about? Linux? Linux and other *nix's have vulnerablilities, and antivirus protection does exist for that OS.

    Hm... Seems pretty simple to me.
    1. Have someone at the school make them sign something that says they will have virus protection and spyware protection on their machines, and that it be kept up to date. Failure to keep the machine clean can result in suspention of service at any time.
    2. When one of them has an infected machine that starts pinging the shit out of your network, Unplug them!
    3. Point to document mentioned in step 1 above when they start whinging about it.

    There see, that wasn't too hard!

    Am I the only one here who things that real freedom is achieved only when you can tollerate an opposing point of vew?

    Why can't BK develop, and sell software under any liscense they choose? Why isn't Linus free to use that solution if he so chooses? Why is it ok for us to rip on the MS type people for behavior that is OK for us to emulate in support of free and open software?

    Why is it ok to try and screw BK over, who spent a great deal of money to develop this?

    but with virtual networking and CIDR, IPv4 is not going to die any time soon - why would anyone WANT to have to replace all their equipment (like routers, etc.) just to get IPv6 - the ROI doesn't justify the move.

    What utter tripe. There are no HIPPA concerns with BitTorrent. Period. If you can't get your work to open a hole in the fire wall, then get them to shell out $25 and actually buy the CD set, just like they do with all the OTHER software they buy and use.

    And just to be clear about this, Red SHat started this version number pollution scheme. If we numbered Slackware releases the same way they do, we'd be in the 30's at this point.
