I don't know about you all, but I'd prefer to keep my servers up and running as much as possible, the less thermal flexing the better for the components, plus I run a fair amount of cron jobs after midnight.
I haven't read any of Tad's work, how does he compare to Robert Jordan (Of the Wheel of Time cycle), who's got a legion of fans addicted to his lengthy tomes?
Computers don't really wear out, my master browser at home is a 486/33 running FreeBSD, it must be 7 year old at least. But I'm getting ready to rotate it out and replace it was a P90.
What drives hardware sales is new applications that make older computers nearly useless. I think the latest one coming down the pike is DIVX:).
My main computer for a few years was my 486 laptop. When I started to write books, it was too slow, so I upgraded to a Pentium 75.
I had a Pentium 75 for my main computer for a year, but when I started to get into MP3's, it was inadequate. I upgraded to a Celeron 300.
Now, I'm getting into DIVX:), so I bought a barely adequate Celeron 566 Dell NETPC as a set top box. I hardly know anyone else who can play DIVX:), which is a shame, since I'd like to trade them RL.
The IRS is lame about that depreciation schedule,. I think 3 years is a lot more reasonable.
Tito paid the Russians, they okayed him, he should be allowed to go up.
It's sad to see NASA throw their wait around when Russia has a magnitude more experience in space than the US. Check duration records, Russia, 430+ days, US, 84.
and gun clubs, sponsored situations where safe firearm handling and using were practiced.
Some of the things drilled into you were safety issues like:
keep your ammo and guns separate, locked up preferably.
don't shoot at anything you don't want to kill
guns are not toys
I read about kids who take their parents guns to school, and I wonder just how many of these parents keep the guns and ammo together, unlocked in a drawer, just waiting for a curious kid.
You wouldn't leave your root password to your office's server lying around on a piece of paper, you don't leave your guns and ammo lying around.
All those stories in the NRA magazines are made up.
All those statistics about crime dropping in concealed carry states like Florida are made up to.
Please, all you people aren't smart enough to own and use firearms are responsibly, leave them to the government, which knows best, jusrt like it knows best about PGP, DecSS and Apple G4s.
My extended family (about 60 strong) has owned guns, from handguns to Assault Rifles, for 80 years, with no gun related deaths or injuries, I guess statistically we're all gonna die tomorrow.
I bet you received so much harassment from the teenage boys inhabiting Slashdot (as most female Slashdotter's have mentioned to me, in private) that you no longer log in.
Ironic, too, that an article about geeks being bullied has the subtext of a woman being bullied on a geek website.
When you're laying fiber (or even installing cat5), the incremental cost to lay double or triple the amount that you currently need is very low compared to the cost for the labor (or the cost for new jeans and a t-shirt if you're the hapless SA crawling through ceiling panels and ducst:) ).
So, most fiber (or cat5) installers add more than they need, leaving some dark until they need it. Then, it's a simple matter of plugging the ends into Cisco's.
They're in Rochester, NY, I don't know if they are anywhere else.
After all costs are totalled, it costs me $25 for DSL and 5 Ip's.
Installation kit was free (including a Cisco 677 DSL modem/router, and USB NIC), and I did the installation myself.
I'm pretty happy with it.
Mir, the little station that could

I'm going to miss Mir. The inhabitants broke all the space habitation records, and they kept it barely habitable with ingenuity on a shoestring, real seat of the pants flying.
For those not living in a third world community as a monied elite, or not living in America, let me explain what a gated community is (no, it's not something controled by the gate daemon).
A gated community is a self selected housing tract encircled by walls and a gate or two. You can easily get in if you live there, if you don't, you need to wait at the gate until someone comes for you. So, if you're a pizza driver (cf. Snowcrash), you need to be expected, and someone needs to wave you in. If you're visiting friends, better call first. If you're poor, a missionary or the wrong skin color, forget it.
Gated communities are insular, and deprive their inhabitants of serendepitous encounters that happen in mixed neighborhoods. They are a form of self isolation, and can be very damaging to democracy. If you never meet a person who thinsk differently than you, your worldview shrinks.
Now, is Slashdot turning into a gated community? Is self serving pro Linux moderation closing our mindests to new viewpoints? Will Slashdot 10 years from now be a home to old fogeys, ranting about Linux, when the hot new OS is based on Be, or Multics of Plan 9 or something?
We should be worried about this. One solution I propose is to randomly mod up a -1 post to +5, and randomly mod down a +5 post to -1, just to mix things up a little. Remember Hegel, a little conflict is good as it leads to a healthier synthesis.
You are thinking of the moronic Circuit City divx, where you had to hook your DVD player up to a phone line to play a divx movie.
The article is talking about divx:) or some other punctionated abomination, a movie format that fit's TV quality movies onto a single CD, still not DVD quality though.
I haven't made any packet rules yet, what are yours like? Though I'll still keep my zonealarm running on my windows boxen.
And did you find a management cable? I had to track one down through ebay.
suck even more
one of the first things I did on my Cisco DSL router was to reset the exec and enable passwords.
This Alcatel really sucks if you can't even do that.
I don't know about you all, but I'd prefer to keep my servers up and running as much as possible, the less thermal flexing the better for the components, plus I run a fair amount of cron jobs after midnight.
Whatever.

I'm sorry, you were cleared to OTIII, but there's a new clearance level OTIII2K, the old OTIII is being discontinued at the end of the year.
You can try to pass an audit for OTIII2k one time, at a huge fee, and if you fail there are six new courses for you to pass.
of p2p.
And I've been happy with edonkey for downloading DIVX.
I think p2p will always be there, but may be a little tougher to use, which will just keep out Joe Sixpack, so it's not necessarily a bug.
Today, there is an almost violent dislike for anything Microsoft in the Linux community - just look at some of the postings on slashdot!
/coy Why, whatever does he mean?
I thought Russian fatality rates were about par for the course, astronauting is dangerous.
Though I've never heard of them losing 7 at once.

I'm sorry, I can't parse that, it's such an oxymoron.
and all other authority figures.
Did you ever notice, how in the end, the kids defer to the authoritu figures, ie. the local Sheriff?
If Scooby Doo was being written today, Metallica would guest star. I can even see it.
Opening scene, the Mystery Van drives by a broken down Ford Econoliner, with a bunch of longhair's peering at the engine. They stop.
Shaggy: Zoiks! It's Metallica!
Thelma: Metallica? You're famous rock stars, why are you stranded on the side of the road?
Lars: Yes, we're famous, but we're broke. Somehow, we're not getting royalties any more.
Fred: This sounds like a mystery!

We're always reading about cool inventions these Brits are making, do they get more respect than American scientists?
It seems like American scientists get little respect, and the best and brightest in America go into business.

If you get unlucky, you sell obsolete warez in teh subway.
my honey got into it while watching it, and almost wanted to read the book.
The dialog was straight from the book.
Chani was a hottie.
The spice induced hallicinations were cooled.
The ornithopters sucked, the Harkonnen uniforms were kind of lame.
The worms were very phallic.
They fudged the last battle scene, they didn't show the atomic blast and the emperor's ship getting hit.
I'd probably watch it again.

I tried to find one a few weeks ago, but got lost in pop-ups, vote for me's and porn banners.
And then I tried to explain the porn banners to my wife, ouch!
In a minute or two, Agent Micheal and Agent Taco will burst in on the trolls, guns a blazing, and capture OSM (Open Source Morpheus).
