This reminds me of a saying on a local radio station in Joliet, IL. It talks about heavy metal music, but the meaning is the same:
Heavy metal doesn't create psychos, it just helps psychos be more creative.
It's much more productive to find out who is mentally unstable in an environment, than to waste resources blaming others for something than cannot be reversed. I feel that some of these cases can be prevented by paying attention to what the mentally unstable kids are saying and doing. There are some people who like to kill just for fun or whatever, but I think most of this type of violence is caused by some kids looking for attention, or being frustrated/stressed out due to constant negative attention by their peers.
Parents should spend less time in court, and more time talking to their kids to find out what's going on in their lives.
...why not have Java support. If M$ doesn't want to do it, maybe Sun could if M$ opens up the architecture a bit. If it's so easy to port other languages to.NET, someone could do Java. If we could all play nice together, maybe all of us could get the benefits of both platforms.
But I guess that would be in a perfect world, the "anti-earth". Beam me up snotty, this planet has sucked for a long time.
Also, for #2, not only would Earth have to cross one of the small lines of communication, the line would have to land on the telescope as it spins around with the Earth, and it has to be on a clear night! If I didn't get a "C" in my statistics class, I might be able to figure out that probability.
In the meantime, I'm sitting back, drinking a beer, listening to Jimmy Buffett, waiting for aliens to talk to us. (wastin' away again in Margar-alien-ville.)
Parrothead logging out...
I still don't know why some of us geeks, especially a typical slashdot reader, would care about spending $99 on an OS. Who the hell cares? Computer Scientists, in general, make more than most people in the general public (or have the potential, anyway). The cost is a moot point. I paid $29 for RH7 and would have gladly paid $99 for it, had it cost that much. Don't care.
Also, I love the fact that there are OSs out there that I can tweek, but most of the time, I'm writing software. I spend some of my free time playing with linux, but usually, I spend my free time writing software that does other cool stuff (*net, 3D, AI, whatever). If Apple comes out with a *nix like version I can use and forget about, Cool! Where do I add it to my cart.
It's kinda like auto racing. Some people love to work on the car, and others love to drive it. I don't mind working a little to get my floppy drive mounted, or setting up samba to work on my PC network. That's cool and all, but I'm more like the race car driver, I may work on it myself from time to time, but the real joy is DRIVING IT! Once I get things set up the way I want them, I rarely modify it, until the next version comes out.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad there are the flavor of professionals out there who love to tweek linux until it screams. That's great because it benefits us all. I'm just not sure all of us want to do that.
Rock on!

Keep coding and peace out!

Looks like NASA will have to be the next big opensource advocate! Free software development anyone?
