  1. Ditching MP3 on Non-MP3 Codecs? · · Score: 1
If you think about it for a second, MP3 really is getting close to being decade-old technology. The great people in the LAME crew have pulled a lot out of the format since then, and LAME encoded files have surpassed not only the Fraunhofer codec itself, but definetly kick some other formats' asses. Still, it can only last so long. With the open-sourcicity (sourcery? sourcity?) of OGG, and it's relative youthfulness in comparison to MP3, it probably has the best shot at stealing MP3s crown. Besides the fact that that it sounds damn good.

If the developers (hey, if you can code, why not lend a hand?) can bring out Version 1.0 (It's RC3 right now) in the not-all-too-distant-future, and it gets just a teensy little bit of hardware support, Ogg Vorbis is well on it's way to the mainstream.

  2. Shit Happens, But We Need To Press On on NASA to Cancel Missions · · Score: 1

Space exploration is, IMHO, one of *the* most important fields to pursue. Imagine what we could do if only we could travel *this* solar system? 1. Terraform Mars and resettle a couple million. there are surely enough who would be willing to start a new life on another planet. We need to give *this* planet time to recover itself. 2. An almost *endless* supply of hydrogen and other gases off Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune...for energy. Metals too, probably. 3. Research in general (what makes other planets tick; is it possible for other life-forms to evolve on foreign planets; etc.) ...just to name a few. There will be setbacks, and yes, even people killed. The crew of the Discovery knew it was dangerous, but they were brave enough to go on the mission. I think we need to pour MORE money into space funding, and science in general. ALL nations should pitch in, and forget this rivalry crap that is going on everywhere. Who CARES who is first in space/on the moon as long as we DO get there? Money shouldn't be the issue, nor the presence of cultural or religious differences.

  3. Resistance Is Futile on Implications For Software Like Napster And Gnutella? · · Score: 1

The government/companies will ALWAYS try to shut down operations like Napster because they have no connection to the people who use it. "They" see this: Napster=People distributing copyrighted material=illegal=SUE THEM They ignore the simple fact that most Napster users still buy CDs, and many buy MORE than if they didn't have Napster, me for instance. And all this doesn't even have anything to do with my hate of copyrights and my contempt for millionaire music artists who probably don't even do as much for society than a lawyer, who earns significantly less. But now I'm straying off the topic. Fact is, this "revolution" of sorts cannot not be stopped. Napster was only so popular because of its ease of use. Another program just like it will spring up in no time, non-commercial and just as powerful. Much harm would be averted if the record companies AND the government would try to work with such projects not against them. "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em"
