  1. Excellent. on Crossover Office 2.0 Released · · Score: 1

Glad to hear it. Keep up the good work - kinda related to the Wine/Foxpro thing :)

  2. Gentoo really is excellent... on Gentoo Linux 1.2 · · Score: 4, Informative

I saw Gentoo a while ago and thought i would giving it a try, boasting an excellent portage system and a tiny initial download. The portage system is the best i have found, even compared to the FBSD Ports its is, i think, by far superior, giving you an interface very similar to apt-get and dpkg to install the ports. The install, even though time-consuming, is actually very straight forwards, whter beginner, experienced admin, or hardened guru, you will get along with it just fine. Everything is compiled from source, so true enough, its not really suited to a slow machine. Unless your a very patient person, or its designed to be a server. However even though i think binary packages might be a good idea for those who dont want to compile, the system becomes extremely fast due to optimizations in the compile process. The website is comprehensive and the people at Gentoo exceptionally happy to help you out. if you find it hard to get an answer then let me know! ill help you! The bleeding edge software that theyre happy to supply, and the very latest in everything is an extreme advantage when coming form a debian backgroud. finally you dont have things breaking, and you dont have to trapes around looking for latest updates or debs. just emerge rsync, and get the latest one! Gnome2 is exceptionally nice! :) But i guess you guys should try it out for yourself. im sure you wont be dissapointed

  3. Re:More space.. on The Past and Future of the Hard Drive · · Score: 2, Informative

I cant remember who posted about it but it was on /. not long ago. A professor in the US has designed a hard-drive with works just like RAM. Its blisteringly fast but is resistant. IE: after a reboot will not lose data. Resistant Random Access Memory. Apparently the limitations on size for these babies are phenomenal. were talking terabytes and terabytes. however if this is going to be produced, or if its just vapourware is yet to be seen. I would however revolutionarize our current data storage!

  4. Security Reasons on Where are the "Internet" Appliances with Ethernet Cards? · · Score: 2

What i would imagine the major reason they are fitted with Modems are for the security reasons behind them.

You will probably be dialing in to a closed network not openly connected to the rest of the net therefor DSL would be an option anyways. This would reduce the possibilities of it being hacked, and if the number was hard coded into the TiVO software or something then it would make it much harder to dial in to this netowkr using a standard modem/pc.

I refuse to believe that it is as simple as connect to their server. etc.

Companies such as these rely on the service to make them money, if it ws being hacked or exploited every few months or whatever then this is major cause for concern and all of the services users.

Hope this will spread a bit of light!

  5. Zone Alarm for a single linux box. on GNOME, Security, Linux, and Cable Modems? · · Score: 1

There are very similar programs for a single linux box, one i throughly recommend is Firestarter (Linked here)

Its basically an IP-CHAINS front end thats very configurable and easy to use.

giv eit a whirl. i tried cracking my machine the other day to test it and it worked very well.

aterwards try using `many of the web port probers. :)

    have a good time

  6. Its about time. on 'Gnome Foundation' Takes Aim at MS Office · · Score: 1

its took its time but finally Linux is getting the support it needs to really hit the desktop market, hopefuly now these big named companies will put some big funding into GNOME to see more come out for the project. What about KDE though?
Will KDE start to drop behind the GNOME development?

If GNOME (or KDE for that matter) can make the desktop standard even higher with more internationalization and and a great MS Compatible, competative office suite all thats left to do is for the big desktop orientated linux companies like RedHat, Mandrake and SuSE to clean up the Installation, Program Instalaltion/uninstallation process and then do we have a really threatening OS on our hands?

Even though i hate to say it, Im not bothered about the techie side to Linux, but 90% of windows are. Im just happy to see the desktop finally moving the in right direction.
