  1. Blow Off! on Cleaning Your Keyboards? · · Score: 1

My last keyboard finally died. It probably choked to death on all the cat hair, dust, crumbs, fingernail clippings, fish food, and other assorted grode under the keys. If I'd only known about Blow Off...

I know, canned air is canned air. But you must experience the Blow Off site to fully understand why I like it. They also manufacture some...interestingly named degreasers and adhesives.

  2. Come on, now. on Yahoo Clubs Site Blocked By Saudi Arabia · · Score: 1

Here we go again, assuming that every other nation in the world should follow the Great USAdian Example. Whether you like it or not, some countries feel like they have a duty to keep their citizens from seeing some stuff. And whether you like it or not, it's the right of whoever's ruling that country to decide what and how much of it gets blocked. And no amount of yelling and hellraising from USAdians is going to change that.

Gotta agree; go ahead, hit me with a "Redundant." I don't mind.

Seems to me if your user number is over, say, 50, your chances of getting an article posted here are slim to none. Unless of course you're submitting a question to Ask Slashdot whose answer can easily be found (or at least have some light shed on it) by running a simple Google search. Or you're submitting a thinly-veiled piece of flamebait. I think perhaps I'll try submitting "What's the best Linux distribution?" or "Should I turn my boss in for distributing one (1) licensed font on a floppy?" or even "Where is the power button on an NEC Direction 300L?" and see what happens.

Sure. If you're half the country away on business, would you want to call your parents/mate/friends and say "Oh, dude, I forgot--I'll pay you back for the tape when I get back, but could you tape Stick Your Pole In My Hole for me tomorrow night?" Didn't think so. :-)

  5. AOL for Linux? Why not? on Official AIM for Linux · · Score: 1

I know, I know, it's just AIM now, but think for a second.

Yes, AOL sucks big floppy donkey genitals. I'm not saying it doesn't. But if AOL started pushing a Linux version, maybe--just maybe--some of the people that use Windoze just because it does everything they want will start to sit up and take notice. That might be a good start to converting a nice chunk of the Microserf population.

  7. Here's another... on John Carmack On Consoles Vs. Personal Computers · · Score: 1

I own both a Playstation and a fairly asskicking computer. I play games on both. However, I have found that I much prefer sitting on my nice cushy sofa with my feet on my coffee table, playing my game on my decent-sized TV, whose sound is run through my stereo with the nice Infinity speakers. I can kick back and relax there much easier than when I'm sitting in my usual half-lotus position in my marginally comfortable computer chair, unable to put my feet on anything except maybe the dead printer under the desk, playing my game on a 15" monitor that's right in my face.

And, well, it just seems that the best games are on console. Gimme Xenogears or Tekken or MGS on PC, and I might reconsider that...and it is just me, or are the vast majority of PC RPG's devoid of plot and character development beyond "here's some live steel, go here and kill this?"

  9. Great idea, but... on FAQ On Convincing Big Companies To Try Linux? · · Score: 1

You'd have to make it simple. Really simple. Chances are, the reason why these corporate beancounters cling to MS boils down to: they're used to it, all their stuff works on it, and they don't want to have to relearn everything. They want to stick with stuff they're comfortable with. Let's face it, the phrases "rebuilding the kernel" or "mounting/unmounting the drives" can sound pretty scary to Joe Microserf; I know they gave me the willies when I was first checking Linux out. Explain stuff in plain, plain language. We're not talking Linux-for-Dummies plain or Idiot's-Guide-to-Linux plain, we're talking Linux-For-Drooling-Morons plain. Demystify the scary-sounding terms as best you can. And while yes, security is an issue to the corporate beancounters, you can always mention that your average Melissa/ILOVEYOU/VB virus du jour will probably not hurt that Linux box at all.

Unless they download that Naughtily Portman movie. ;-)
