Is it just me or is it Ironic that the UK broadband is being delayed! Perhaps the government have reached their mail-data-limit for the month and are being heavily throttled? On the other hand, it could be as simple as a lost packet!
I agree, compromising with the ideal is a necessity. You will have to choose the best of the bunch. If you choose correctly, you will have some say, some affect, or at least have a chance to contribute to changing software ( Complaining in/. certainly isn't the answer). Like politics, if you don't like A or B, then you create C, or help to create C or get on board with A or B and try to make changes. Perhaps putting a vote in the most versatile option, the one that doesn't necessarily tick the most boxes, but has the best chance to change, or adapt, is the answer. The thing to remember about software, is that anything is possible. Any combination of anything you want is _technically_ possible. In the real world, you have a few choices, I personally will always choose the one, in which I have the most say in what happens, the one where I can aid, help, and make changes. If one is not prepared to put some work in themselves, in some respect, should one really sit and make nonconstructive comments on forums like/. ? Either way, it makes no difference.
I woke up this morning, did 80 press-ups and 80 situps (the first time I've done this in years and years) and later I will go for a 5k run. Don't change career, just make a little time for exercise. You may be surprised how energetic and awake you feel in the morning after some light exercise. Keep your body healthy and the mind will follow!
Perhaps one of the competitors will actually provide a service that is DRM free, or at least value for money like Spotify.
Until users get uncontrolled access to the media they want to purchase, their will only be one company that will remain solid and stable: p2p sharing.
Die or survive, I don't think I could care less for netflix.
I'm getting tired of using this as a reply but:
My response to users complaining about the software or OS they use is the same. If you don't like it, do something about it, don't just put up with it. Of course, you might find that although the alternatives offer features x, y and z (e.g. rolling updates, that are decoupled, more control of the interface etc) they may not be able to deliver you other features a, b and c. Windows, and Mac OSs are what they are. We know the pros and we know the cons. You have a choice. We all do. Complaining doesn't help, but one can "talk with their actions" and change the products they use. It's up to each user to change the market, to change the direction of a feature, a product or a company, by actually using the software they want, not compromising with software that doesn't cut the mustard and then complaining about it.
your computer knowledge is limited and your skills are lacking. lol @ OSX crashing. Even bigger lol @ linux driver issues. Yep, sounds like a Windows user to me.
Thanks for the amazingly helpful comment.
So what is the best?
My point is, Just because something is less bad; it crashes fewer times (not that I agree based on my experience) , doesn't mean we should praising them. In the same way we shouldn't be praising thieves because they are not murderers.
Lets give a company credit where it's due. Agreed. I'll wait here with my "Thank you, Microsoft" letter, when they meet *my* expectations, I will post it.
Another brain fart from MS it seems.
User Interface
How can a person interacts with the system. It's *all* about usability, speed... etc etc (We all know this crap)
Microsoft release a new OS, and concentrate all their efforts on bells and whistles. Then expect a pat on the back when they make those bells move better and those whistles render more quickly....
Discussing windows 8 is tiresome.
I love how low people's standards are. Microsoft have a very easy job to please lots of people.
Make it crash less.
From such an expensive, and costly (in terms of money, time and compromising of morals and ideals) *I* expect better. Microsoft are a large company with lots of money, lots of employees and lots of skill and experience. As a consumer one should ask for more, expect only the best, and when a comapny doesn't deliver, one should speak up, demand improvements or go else where.
Stop setting the bar so low.
I don't understand. From what I can see the "selling point" of Windows 8 is metro, is touch screen, is the new UI. You, and many others, I'm sure, will be instantly disabling these features?
Guess what, I don't blame your for this, I just wonder why you don't choose an operating system to fit your needs, whether it's sticking with Windows 7 or moving elsewhere. Is it a good idea to "upgrade" and then spend time and effort working around those upgrades to have what you had before?
This is fantastic if you want to use your Kindle. Of course to drive down prices, and to insure variation a market needs competition. What is occurring as you describe it, is not helping competition.
DRM may or may not aid in the "fight against piracy" but it's pretty much a no-brainer: companies like amazon use DRM to lock people into their product. Fine, it's a perfectly viable buissness technique, but I, like many (I assume) will not be playing along.
I wish there was a good reply proving you wrong, i/really/ *really* !really! wish there was.
It may well be the case, that you are just 100% correct, how sad:/
Well, firstly, it's naive to think that the materials are the only cost. It may be cheaper to produce each indivdual file realtive to a book, but things like website admin, server admin, storage space, bla , bla.... all contribute to a final price. Having said that, I agree, that the prices are not representative of the value of a the books them selves.
Well the ideal situatuon would not be for Amazon et al. to be/forced/ in to anything. Instead they shall simply see that DRM isn't reducing piracy / increasing sales, hence there is no need for it.
It's a step in the right direction, but it's a long road ahead.
The point being, DRM makes next to no difference either way in terms of sales?
So perhaps, it's just here to make good slashdot posts, to allow people here to talk about something other than MAC vs Linux vs Windows?
I can't see any other benefit's, it can go in a box along with the current copywrite/pantent/trademark laws...
Why should I care if my eBook is multi-platform if I'm only ever going to read it on one platform?
Yes, if *you* are only going to read it on one platform, you won't care. For those people who would like the opputnity to read an e-book on multiple platforms, this is very useful.
Or to phrase it a different way: yes, your choices are made based on your needs, woopty do!
Well this is a very over simplified model of a finacal system.
Firstly size of country is just one factor, there are many more factors I can think of and most probably plenty more I can't.
Further to this, the cost of oil will always go up and people will always moan, and groan and rightly so. At the same time, there is nothing the end user can do, they have no leverage, at the end of the day we need fuel, so we use fuel, regardless of price.
So this will have affects on any buisness that use transport directly; their costs go up, their prices go up (or their proftis go down - Unlikly). So then any companies using those companies are effected, allbeit indirectly. And then chain goes on until everyone is affected. So Prices of "everything" is now higher, this is where unions step in and start asking for more money for their workers. Resulting in a massivly complex network of changes to the value of goods and services, ebbing and flowing like the tide's that are pulled around by the moon.
Welcome to the world we live in. It's called inflation, recession, regression, BOOMs. Thats the economical world. Stuff affects other stuff. But "dismanatlling modern civilisation" is an over-statement. In reality there are lots of factors that you and I have not considered.
4. You have to be attacked by somebody, who knows how to access these private resources.
5. They have to do some thing with those resources (perhaps just read)
6. You have to actually care that all of this just happened.
I think it's good these security risks are highlighted, It can only bring about a faster fix. Of course in reality their are more problems with Apache, with IIS, with "ngix"(meh!) and all software. We don't know about these and they won't cause to much fuss.
Bad Joke of the day: What do you do if your http server is broken?
Just apply A-patch-e!!!
(sorry)
Exactly, and further to this we could of course just share our DVDs etc.
There are so many other ways to achive the same goal. In this case the goal is breaking the law. Software Piracy is mass-law-breaking and I would go as far to say, anyone who knows what it is has done it at least once in their life. The current system is a lost cause, a revolution of the way we distribute digital content, how we protect it, and how we keep it profitable for the creators has to happen.
Ultimately, someone is going to have to come up with a way to stop people from pirating their content because there is no advancement in the overall legal situation by simply making it inconvenient for morons to share files.
To stop people sharing content they shouldn't be (i.e. 100% of illegal sharing), we must stop people sharing all together. As you say, whether it's downloading content from a server, P2P, mailing it, or just giving it to someone.
Who would be the best people to work this problem out? The People who have most to lose my things changing? No, but they have the power at the moment.
The people who take part in alot of piracy are surley the one's to be asking, "What do we have to do to make you pay for this product?".
I'm not sure what the answer is, I just know were not going to find it anytime soon, we are stuck around a false optimum point and we need to revolutionize the system!
Most of these cases and problems all step from piracy. The Respective authorites trying to "fix" a broken system. Copyrights, patents, trademarks, they just wont ever work for all parties when it comes to intelectual property and digitally stored media.
Instead of running around, putting pots and pans down to catch leaking rain water, we need to fix the roof.
Until then, there will be countless, pointless conversations about Moral vs Legal aspects. Each of which are vague and ever-changing. Every story I read about Authorities trying to tackle piracy, or tackle Internet related issues in general, I die a little more inside.
Having said that, I don't thin we're in for any revolution anytime soon...
Is it just me or is it Ironic that the UK broadband is being delayed! Perhaps the government have reached their mail-data-limit for the month and are being heavily throttled? On the other hand, it could be as simple as a lost packet!
There is a different way, a way where all what you seek is possible.,,,

No problem. Any other light-hearted, non-important things I can say that clearly piss you off? Just let me know.
You see, "ignorance of the law" is no excuse, citizen. Unless you're an authority.
True say!

Great, so, can we stop pretending that copyrights are more important than free speech now?
You can stop pretending, but you just can't talk about it, just in case!
I hate airports: "Those our my shoes..."
