The privacy option polled poorly for the target demographic of born but not dead yet. More studies are encouraged for fringe groups out of that range...
Your statement that minied code is only about variable naming is incorrect. While that's involved - minification also strips out any comments. Removes white space. And merges multiple files/libraries into a single file.
Also - it's becoming more common to have dynamically generated javascript. Which saves initial page load time, but increases the difficulty of understanding what the web application is doing.
Ie, your premise is wrong and would seem to indicate that you've never tried to work with modern minified (much less obfuscated) code.
Where the topic is up for discussion though is whether this matters or not. I suspect I at least don't care too much about this in practice. Other than javascript libraries, I have difficulty thinking of a javascript application that would make sense to contribute to or fork. Though I do agree with the general FSF argument that there's an increasing risk of users not having control of their machines any more as the market moves towards using only webapps.
You are correct. But I have one defense of the medallion system. We really don't need more cabs in nyc. Except for those two hours of the day when the shifts are switching - we simply have too many cabs out.
this is an area where there's a market that I was really hoping google would bust into.
All I want when booking a vacation is:
- What's the cheapest flight to X. I don't care when or what carrier.
This functionality used to exist. Then it disappeared. I never understood why. This was a killer feature on a variety of vacation sites.
If they want to blow my mind, I'd cream my pants at:
- Ability to search for cheapest flight anytime including taxes/fees and assuming one carry on bag.
I'd even be willing to accept a 30s must watch video add with flashing lights if the above were offered.
The best part about this data is that, if we can assume that the data output is an objective evaluation of teacher quality - we should be able to rule out teacher performance as a variable in student performance.
And since, the government claims that they've controlled against all other variables such as socioeconomic status - it should be possible to identify which parents are the crappiest parents. Which will make a great website.
Windows is still ahead of linux for two reasons.
Agreements with hardware vendors to sell only windows machines or lose their low cost windows licenses. And the word format.
Get rid of those two things - and windows dies in 2-3 years. It's simply inferior in every way to linux right now.
... universities won't support linux - but they also don't actively hinder it. Support implies that you can call the help desk and they'll be able to help you with your issue. Which (imo) is still not cost effective in the case of desktop linux support - and I say that as somebody who's used linux exclusively for 6 years at a university.

To summarize, more poor people is awesome as long as you're rich.
Sure. But it might also help if students went to school to learn. I suspect most go to get a degree first.

Because they hate us for our freedom?
