I heard Linux LVM does snapshots too. So FreeBSD is actually behind Linux in this.

This is a prime example of what's wrong with slashdot today. Whoever modded this up is a fucking idiot. Let's break it down:

You heard linux LVM does snapshots. So basically, you have no idea. Shot in the dark. I don't know why you used your karma bonus on such an obvious gem of wisdom. But hey, you were right at least.

"So FreeBSD is actually behind Linux in this." I like how you made an assumption, and then stated a fact based on that. Karmaworthy indeed. The thing is, YOU'RE WRONG. But nevermind that, I knew you were an idiot already.

What really bothers me is, I know I'm not the only who followed this exact same train of thought, but here two days later I'm the only one replying to smack this guy down. So instead of the majority of people who read this then remembering the real facts, they're going to remember what this guy said and probably go around quoting it in a smug manner thinking they're oh-so-leet.

Until they meet me, and I kill them.

You're a degreed scientist who has read a bunch of reports instead of doing your own research/thinking on the issue. You're just a media blowhorn sporting a degree as a badge of elitism over people who are putting original thought to the subject instead of believing everything they read. If, like me, you've been looking for a free NFS solution, you'll definitely want to try 2.4. There's really no other option at the moment if you need NFSv3 support, as well as reliable file locking (lockd on *BSD doesn't work worth a damn.) Client side NFS never worked completely correctly until 2.2.18, and as a server...I had to reboot it more than a Windows box and deal with stale NFS handles multiple times due to "soft down" situations. I've been using 2.4.0-test11 for about a month and a half now, and it has been solid. Granted, when I benchmarked it's performance against FreeBSD it got owned badly, but at least it can lock files correctly.

Bottom line, if you need a free high availability NFS server, 2.4 is a godsend. If you have the cash, I still recommend sticking with Solaris, however.

Actually, non-glibc Linux 2.0.x kernels can use ipfilter as a kernel module.

Linux has its uses, don't get me wrong, but I'll take an OpenBSD firewall over any Linux firewall, regardless of which distro, or firewalling software it runs.

I completely agree, ipfilter has done stateful firewalling for a long time now, where Linux has just added it. I'll take the more tested codebase any day, it's only logical.
