  1. Little World Schoolhouse on Old Boxen and Charitiable Organizations · · Score: 1

I know of another effort to bring technology to the underprivileged. They have a website at www.worldschoolhouse.org. The website has not been updated for a while, but there have been several trips to Jamaica to delever and help set up computer networks. A few technologically-inclined high school students have even gotten involved to help with the network and to educate teachers. One of the people who run the effort is taking a one year sabattical this year to work on the project.
The contact information should be relatively good. If it does not work, you can contact me and I will get a message through to the founders to start communication.

  2. Electronic Music on Upside downsides MP3.COM. · · Score: 1

May might expect that techno or electronica fans would embrace this technology whole-heartedly. This is certainly not the case as MP3 supresses the high and low tones that make some techno particularly "riot sounds" as Atari Teenage Riot puts it. I expect MP3s to remain an internet tool for piracy. The only people who would purchase the songs in MP3 format are those geek-wannabees who either want to show off their new image or are too lazy to go get the CD with much better quality.

  3. NSA wants more recognition on Congress concerned about Echelon · · Score: 1

It seems to me that the NSA wants more power as its role in world politics is concerned. Once the NSA gets its hands on the computer scene, it may use its new influence in its battles with rival intelligence agencies: FBI and CIA, always trying to one up each other. Such a bill could never be passed, but I could easily see a toned down version being accepted. Maybe, the PentiumIII was an NSA plot after all.

Aside: I cannot believe how pervasive the anti-communist mentality is in the US today. Perhaps, our real issues are not with "self-proclaimed communist countries" but rather with the dicators that run them.

  4. "Report Helper" Sites on Ask Slashdot: The Hazards of Developing the Internet · · Score: 1

You might consult those reports-for-sale sites. They have certainly promoted plagiarism among students. Also, check out the colleges that sell diplomas online. Another issue that applies greatly now is the proliferation of such texts as the anarchist's cookbook online.

Each of these issues would certainly help a teacher understand the dangers involved with immoral and illegal actions resulting from the internet.
