  1. Why'd they make it circular? on First Arcology? · · Score: 1

Has anyone else read _Oath of Fealty _ by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle? In it, a huge arcology is built in a near-future Los Angeles. I don't remember the size specifications, but I think that it was 1 kilometer long, 1/2 kilometer wide, and 1/2 kilometer up.

So even though it takes up more area in the horizontal, wouldnt a similair-shaped building (rectangular) be a more effeceint use of the space, and cause less hazards, like falling over, tower of fire scenarios, etc...?

I believe he said that he wanted a gaming computer, so OSX wouldnt help him much there. Yes, OSX has games out on it, but not nearly as much as Windows. Whether you like M$ products or not, if you want to do serious gaming, you've got to use some form of Windows. Linux and Macs are getting more games, but not nearly as much as Windows.

If you want to know what is the best value for the money, look around at Hard|OCP and Anandtech. Every few months Anand's site does system price guides, putting together various systems on a budget. The latest price for a lower-budget gaming system was $1,045. This was in November, so you can get an even better system for that amount, or that same system even cheaper. (Price includes montitor, but not software).

That works good in theory, but its hard to get him wounded enough to not be able to move, or fight back. The human body can withstand quite a beating, and sometimes even being shot doesnt kill you. The idea in any battle is to kill as many as possible, so that they can never fight back. Its good to tie up rescources, but its safer just to kill them all.

Actually, it should get a lot of money. Apparently when the original shipment of NESs went out, they came with a little robot called ROB. As I understand it, he could interact with some of the games. ROB is a really rare collector's item now, but I have no idea how much it would be worth.

I'm just glad that they're taking the time to do everything right. I don't think that people would appreciate an unstable 'stable' version of the kernel. If I have to wait another two months, thats fine with me. When it comes out, I know that I'll have the best kernel possible. And /. has been right posting those "its almost here" stories. It is almost here. Right now they're just doing bug fixes.

Too bad encryption isnt the final answer. In order for ISPs and routers and such to be able to deliver emails, they have to be able to read the 'to:' and 'from:' addresses. Im not sure, but I dont think that PGP or any other encryption programs can encrypt these headers (maybe the subject also), so if the FBI decides that they really want to read your email, they can save any emails that contain your 'From:' address and crack your encryption when they want to get around to it. PGP, while damn good, is not invincible. Neither is any other encryption scheme. If the gov't really wants to read your email, and they really want to spend all the time and computing power (I'm sure that they have a few special-purpose computers for decryption), then they can read your email.

Encrypting your mail will keep prying eyes out for the most part, and they wont be able to track you down by searching your emails for anything that the FBI feels is 'a threat to national security' that week.

  9. Open Standard on USB 2.0 Spec Is Final - Up To 480 MB/s · · Score: 2

I guess the reason everyone is so excited about USB getting faster is that its kinda like open source software in the light that anyone can use it and develop for it without having to pay any royalties to anyone. Despite the fact that it is faster, Firewire is owned by Apple, and anyone that wants to use it has to pay a small royalty to them. This apparantly pisses off a lot of hardware manufacturers, so unless the really need the speed of Firewire (digital cameras and the like) they'll go with USB every time, especially since its supported on almost all major platforms, both hardware and software.

I for one am excited about USB 2.0, and cant wait till I am able to get scanners, printers, and webcams that support the new standard.

Too bad Phil Hartman cant come back, though... the movie, no matter who was writing it and how good it was, would not be as good without Troy McClure. :(
