How do you figure that, twitter? You're linking to the story that details the problem, but did you find the one with the solution? Or are you implying that Microsoft never did anything about it, but Google did?

Of course, I love this part from that article, in the usual Register style:

A Microsoft representative says in a statement that "to the extent that spammers are successful in essentially manipulating results, they will hurt the user experience on all search engines".

That left us scratching our heads for a couple reasons. For one, the same search terms don't appear to generate malicious returns on Google or Yahoo!, so how can the rep claim this is an industry-wide problem? And for another, what does spam have to do with this? We're wondering if our inquiry got mixed up with someone else's.

Emphasis mine. Would you like some ketchup with your crow? I'd bet good money you made the same point when this first happened to Live.com.

Guess what? Microsoft has a pretty good development suite on their hands. To be honest, C# is largely what I'd do if I could rewrite Java from scratch with no concerns for backward compatibility. It has a couple of really cool features, like the virtual, override and new keywords that let you specify what should happen when you cast a class to it's base class and then call a method on it that's defined in both.

Guess what? We all know that. We've tried Eclipse and KDevelop and Glade all your other tools. You have pretty cool languages but you insist on keeping your barriers artificially high by forcing a primitive toolset on everyone so that only the anointed few can develop software for your platform.

Of course one of the core problems is someone like this, who from the article seems like the quintessential "Microsoft sux" type-A personality suddenly realizes that Microsoft (and Borland and others) have been writing far superior development tools for the past ten years that actually increase developer productivity and having great success at it. What an idea! Having to learn 14 different tools to get something done might be good for bragging and leetness, but they kill productivity. In the real world, that kills the deal.

Imagine what kind of killer product you would have if you paired Ruby with a good IDE and a good graphical debugger. Or Python. A good front-end to MySQL that's actually easy to use. Or an admin tool for Apache that makes sense. But "ease of use" is not "leet", so no dice. "We don't want VB in Linux". That's a great attitude, and it will continue to perpetuate the idea that Windows is the only "easy" platform to write software in, with Microsoft tools. There's no reality distortion field here - that's just the truth.

So much potential wasted because of a culture that idolizes unecessary complexity as if it were a badge of honor.

A windows user would not understand, so I'll explain carefully.

Listen closely here. Even a Open Sores Linsux user ("M$ Windoze, LOL") should be able to grok this. Microsoft wrote the ACPI spec to move the functionality out of hardware because systems were becoming too complicated for APM to work. They invested the money on the spec, and they gave their developers the tools to interop with the Windows ACPI implementation. Microsoft is in no way shape or form obligated to give you or anyone else free beer. But, they opened the spec up, which is why you have ACPI on Linux. Follow me so far?

Now, ACPI is not "buggy", it's flaky because it has to account for a shitload of things that the BIOS was supposed to do. So, it works great on some hardware and not so great with other hardware. That's why you can get a vendor-specific DSDT and load it up so that whatever kernel you're using will function correctly. Hell, you can download your own DSDT here if you can be bothered enough. With Windows, Dell and HP and IBM and Acer provide their own. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't.

This infantile conspiracy theory about how "M$" wants to make ACPI fail just for shits and giggles is, like all your other conspiracy theories, more a result of your "evangelize or die" mindset than actual reality. So far you've proved exactly squat, and I don't really expect that to change. The same old sad story, eh?

    • As proof that Bill Gates somehow "sabotaged" ACPI on Linux, you linked to this email, which proves absolutely nothing you've claimed so far.

You have an eight-year old email from Bill Gates wondering whether they should try to prevent everyone from leeching their R&D investment on ACPI (no doubt you think developing software is a zero sum game, but it's not. Someone paid for all that groovy software in your Gentoo boxen), and so far you have provided no proof whatsoever that said email actually ended up causing ACPI to be limited or damaged or "sabotaged" in any way shape or form by Microsoft. None whatsoever, period.

To repeat myself, ACPI is an open standard, of which at least one implementation exists for Linux and FreeBSD. So what is this "situation" you are referring to? Aside from your usual "FUD with a link" recipe that tends to fool the Slashdot moderators, how are you rationalizing that Microsoft "screwed" power management on Linux? By releasing ACPI and screwing themselves over as well?

Seriously, your "if you don't see things in the same glorious black and white as me I can't help you" responses are not going to do it. You need to specify what this "situation" with Linux power management is and why Microsoft caused it.
