  1. Re:What is their definition of free? on EA Flip-Flops On Battlefield: Heroes Pricing, Fans Angry · · Score: 1

no, after 1942 came vietnam, then came "Battlefield 2". for 2 came a bunch of paid updates which were screwed up badly.

There were two expansions (Road to Rome and Secret Weapons) for BF1942 before BF:V came out (though BF:V was built on the same engine as BF1942 so in a sense, it's a mod as well)

    Guess who does better?

    Not fun.

The ones that didn't "buy" their level? I.e those that did it by skill. (Quite fun, if you ask me, as more kills gives more VP. :-)

  3. Battlefield 1942 on Good Online FPS Games/Servers For Beginners? · · Score: 1

Battlefield 1942 is imo currently the best alternative for a gamer that doesn't want to invest major amounts of time and money but still wants a game that doesn't get boring after a few tries. It allows beginners and hardcore gamers alike to play "peacefully" together. It's easy to begin with, has high activity (servers etc) and a healthy age mix among the players.

The game is extremely versatile with many different player classes, vehicles (tanks, planes, boats, apcs), maps and mods. There's room for a gamer just to explore new stuff for an hour or so, just to check out the landscape or cities.

Given the current pricing of the game it's also a very cheap investment ($25 or so, no monthly fees) and for continuity there are websites like BF Tracks that records all your activity over time wrt to performance, medals, play time etc.

Yes, I have to agree here too. Simmons is one of the best authors today.

I was a bit afraid when I started reading the books following Hyperion (Enydimon and Rise of Endymion) b/c hyperion was so good I feared that the Endymion books might "break" the universe he had made... To my relief I was wrong, they are as good and in some parts even better!

The books are set in the same universe as Hyperion but four centuries later. Some of the characters are there from the Hyperion books so I really consider Hyperion series to be a "quadrology" ?

Anyway, I certainly recommend the Hyperion series to anyone!

It's hard to categorize SF so I'll have to mention some other writers that I like:

Vernor Vinge - Deepness, Fire and The across realtime collection.
Orson Scott Card - The Ender saga & Treason
    John Steakly - Armor
Greg Bear - Strength of Stones, Eon & co and Anvil Of Stars (the sequel to Forge of God)

  5. Why a new major release? on Red Hat 8.0 Released · · Score: 2, Informative
Several people have questioned the reason for RH to make this a new major release number. Some of the comments are "Does a new desktop theme mandate a new major release" etc.etc.. The answer is of course, no.

However, aside from the new Blue Curve theme RH 8.0 also contains new major relases of Gnome and Apache. Apache is also probably the most used "userland" application in the system.... So imo Apache 2 and Gnome 2 _alone_ mandates a new major release number for RedHat Linux.

Btw, I thought the short informal mail RH sent to RHN customers is probaly the the best "in a nuthshell" description of RH8:s new features:

    Date: Tue, 1 Oct 2002 14:41:54 -0400
    From: Red Hat Network <rhn-admin@rhn.redhat.com>

    [snip]

What's new in Red Hat Linux 8.0, anyway?

    * A new interface -- a user-friendly desktop with graphical enhancements and improved menu organization

    * The latest Gnu Compiler Collection, gcc-3.2, and a specially tuned and tested high-performace kernel, 2.4.18.

    * Cutting-edge web server technology powered by the latest release of Apache, 2.0.

    * Updated graphical configuration tools that make setting up a Linux server a truly point-and-click experience.

    * A single interface for package selection during and after installation

    * Enhanced personal security, featuring a point-and-click firewall tool to protect your system from Internet intruders.

I do agree with the original poster that it's odd that Mdk has choosen to write the drake-tools w/ Gtk.

The Geek community needs something else. There are certain things that the geek-lobby could work with. Quite (politically) neutral issues such as push for increased government/power-centre funnding/attention of "Stuff that matters".

Some examples; public access broadband deployment, tele-commuting, tax issues (breaks for private investment in HW, books etc for personal education), tech-imigration-legislation, technical research funding etc.etc

The geek community definitely has more issues than just cypher ;-) (EFF) and open-source (RMS & ESR) to fight/lobby for.

Or? Are we just as self absorbed as everybody around us says we are ?
