  1. The myth of sysiphus on Scientologists Force Comment Off Slashdot · · Score: 2

I'm not going to flame you, but I think I should have my say. To be fair, I am Catholic, so I have an admitedly biased look on religion, but here we go anyway.

I'm very sorry you feel the way you do. I have studied, and have found no good alternative to religion. Modern philosophers have tried to justify the non-existance of God with moderate success (ei. Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus), but none have ever given a satisfactory answer to the continuation of human existance. Albert Camus wrote an essay on this very subject in The Myth of Sysiphus and other plays in which he asks, If there is no God, and life is absurd (without any higher meaning), then should we all commit suicide? He did not give an answer to my satisfaction. He used this as a jumping off point to create a way of living that knew no rules, no obligation to anyone, and no feelings for other people. This is not how I choose to live my life.

Camus originally hated religion. He called religion "philosophical suicide" meaning that you left reason when you "got religion". Even Camus changed his mind. He did not become religious, but he did come to have respect for the religious during WWII when he joined the french underground. He no longer thought they were without reason, but rather they accepted fate in a way that others did not.

To conclude, I think it should be stated that the real danger is not religion, but blind following. If you are religious, research. Research your faith and see the reasons behind what they do. That is the rational approach.

    Gotta Go.

  2. couldn't we all just get along? on Human Genome Confirms Evolution · · Score: 1

My question is: Why does one theory preclude the other? I am a creationist, and an evolutionist. I have seen no argument that proves to me that both ideas cannot be true at the same time.

Creationism states that God created the universe/world.
Evolution states that things changed slowly to their present state from a lesser one. I see no reason why both can't coexist.

The problem I see is with Literal Creationism, that sees the Bible only at face value, with no metaphor or deeper meaning. The other problem I see, is with people who seem to be offended at the suggestion that there may be a "God" at all.

The current theory as to the creation of the universe ascribed to be most notable physisists is that the universe was created by the explosion of a miniscule particle of infinite (or near infinite) mass. This particle appeared out of NOWHERE. (this is true, look it up.) This fact alone has sent scientists to religion.

I'm not trying to change minds, simply give a reasonable veiwpoint that is not often expressed. Even Einstien said, "Religion without science is blind, Science without religion is lame."
    Just my thoughts.

  3. cutting in on Michigan "Anti-Hacker" Law's First Felony Charges · · Score: 1

I wonder if this trend in MI will continue.
Might this lead to techno-courts like in Maryland? I think there needs to be more information on the laws, though. There could be a great deal of ambiguity on the limits of the laws.

I find it sad that people are destructive like this for no apparent reason.

    OT:
I don't like the term "hacking." If you've ever read the Hyperion series, they use the term "slicing." Slicers dodge AI watchdogs, and physical harm in a virtual setting. I think the term implies a great deal more finesse.

  4. What you should know on Too Much Corporate Power? · · Score: 1

Here's my opinion. I'ts probably going to be unpopular, and so I'm probably going to get bashed as a troll, but what the hell, you need to understand this.

I am going to tell you a secret. I don't want to, for fear you might use this knowlege because I know my political views are not the same as most people's. On the other hand, consumers are so apathetic that I shouldn't worry about it.

CONSUMERS HAVE THE POWER. Yes, its true. I know it doesn't feel like it at times, but its true. Consumers have the power of choice over what they decide to buy. If you are so worried about big corporate conglomerates, then don't throw your money their way. Patronize smaller businesses and mom and pop stores in your community. Buy off brands. Refuse to pay $150 for shoes. Companies are out to make money. If people stopped buying, then NO MONEY.
The problem is that the average consumer is so apathetic, that they forget that this is a capitalist system. One has to choose what one spends money on. I know what you are saying, "What good can I do?" The trick is consumers need to organize. Ever here the term Boycott? It works.

Now that you know this, lay off bashing businesses. Why? Because businesses are run by people. If you support government regs on business, you are actually taking the rights away from the people...Including yourself! Every person running or owning a business is just an average shmo who had an idea and wanted to make money. (Don't you wish you could earn more money? Sure, we all do.) PLEASE DON'T let the government regulate how we do business.

    Now for the RANT
I am sick and tired of people bashing businesses. The problem is not M$ (even though it IS evil ;->), the problem is not amazon, the problem is the apathetic consumer. People are complaining about how amazon charged different prices: Did you bother to price compair before you purchased? Probably not. If you had, then What's the Deal? You got a good price? Otherwise the fault is your own. I compair prices all the time. I decide when/where to buy gas, music, electronics, ect. Sometimes I look for a month before I buy. Most people are just too lazy. Those people have no right to complain. The bottom line is:

When you bough, you agreed to pay the price. You have no one to blame but yourself.

  5. Re:Anime smanime on Cartoon Network, Tenchi, Silverhawks, and DBZ · · Score: 1

    Alright, everyone,
If you don't know already, here it is...

DBZ was intended as a joke.

Yup, its true. The entire thing is humor. Lets face it, the dialogue is horrid, the plots range from cheesy to downright foolish, and the fight scenes are drawn out to almost infinity.

I admit to being a DBZ fan. Yes, that's right, I too watch Goku in admiration as he punches through boulders and shoots countless forms of energy beams from every body part imaginable. (Uh... no.)

They don't come right out and tell you it's humor, but the clues are there. First clue, *every* name in the show is a pun, mostly for food. Vegeta? Vegetible. Captn Ginyu? Captn Milk. Cacarot... can it be? Are you really a carrot?

I am going to continue to be a fan, and follow the mindless dialogue and the constant fascination with power levels, (Try Planet Namek to keep up on them) but when it all gets too much, just step back and remember: Its *supposed* to be bad!

I think I know what you are trying to say, but you are wrong in your statement. You *can* use heat to do work. That is the whole basis of Carnot's heat engine, and one of the fundamental principles of thermaldynamics. Ambient heat energy can also be used to create work as long as you have a temperature differential. I think that what you are trying to say is that when you supply the heat dump (ie. low temperature reservior) you in fact get negative work. What this means, however is just work in a direction opposite the convention. It is still work that can be used. Now, don't make me get my thermo book out to prove it.

  7. Re:The problem with protesters (rant) on The Heavenly Jukebox, From Hell · · Score: 1

I completely agree with you. I have no problem with napster if the bands don't (AKA Offspring).

What I see with Metallica, however, is a band that decided that they wanted to be *artists*. Long ago people used to say "listen to Metallica because it bugs your parents." I don't think Metallica ever really liked that even though they accepted it.

Metallica has decided that people should listen to their music because they are talented artist. Look at what they've done recently. There are many people who won't listen to anything post Ride the Lighning. The past two albums esp. are a severe break with the norm. The band is testing their creative limits, and trying new things.

Metallica is still Metallica. They still have the same raw emotion and increadible guitar work that fans have come to expect. I think they have won the right to be artists, and to have some control over their music. After all, they did write it, which is more than I can say for some.

  8. Re:Not to put a downer on things on Michael Dell Sees Future In Linux Desktop · · Score: 1

What you say has some merit, but I don't think that adding more OS's to the mix will really change anything.

Think of the Coke/Pepsi "contraversy." There are do you think the addition of RC, and countless off brands have made the market any more dynamic?

Have things really changed for any of them?

Besides, with Linux's open source, it becomes the perfect OS to try and squeeze on any device. Anyone can attempt to tweek it into the right shape.
