Why are you bragging so loudly about something you don't even know the first thing about? You can specify plenty of things about java's heap size when starting a program, such as minimum heap, maximum heap, increment, etc...
What is needed is a much better system than that. People will eventually become aware that blindly trusting anything anonymous is just plain stupid. This is a question of educating the population, and that usually takes a few generations. Patience will pay, I believe.
Nuclear winter might solve the global warming problem, though I totally agree with you. Maybe we should try obliterating a few countries just to cool down the earth by a few degrees and finally get back to normal:P
We're not perfect, but Jeez, look at the rest of the world Same here;) There was a french humorist that had that joke: "Every year sees its bunch of new cretins. But this year it's like next year's bunch is already there".
We don't get better in all ways with age. That might have to do with some of it;)
We should have pulled out of this idiotic thing [UN] a long time ago, and perhaps this will be the final straw Maybe you should just obliterate the rest of the world so that there will be no problem after that with any foreign entity. What do you think?
Ok, sorry about that one, I guess I forgot to type "outside the US". I do live in Europe... And I still have no clue of the legitimacy of a purchase I could make out of allofmp3.com.
Do you have any independent and supportable evaluation of allofmp3.com's legitimacy? I don't, but you don't seem to have either (or you would no ddoubt have posted it). If I don't know, I am not going to spend money on doubtful stuff. You don't even provide one of these "extensive documentation of the legitimacy, legality, and safety of e-commerce transactions with allofmp3.com". Where are they?
allofmp3??? you must be kidding of course. Who in his right mind (except in Russia) would buy from a website that doesn't give you any legitimacy in the country you live in? If the stuff I download is not legal in my country, I prefer not to pay for it.
But when you think about it, it is all really fine. We'll go back to ripping and p2ping and everything will settle down. At least, we won't have DRM crap.
This is just bad configuration. When my DSL is down I can check my email (those that are already downloaded), I can work on my website (coz I have a version running at home). I can even send emails - although they will be sent later on. I can do some clean-up, work on my numerous digital pics, reorganize stuff. I almost have more stuff to do than when I have internet actually, because I don't have the distraction;)
This is going to HURT them a LOT. Let's not get ahead of the game. This is only if it takes off, which will be decided by the market and will sure be a slow process.
Besides, who wants to be deprived of all its documentation every time DSL is down?
That is a bit shortsighted. There are plenty of minor disasters that could destroy a great deal of your life and that would be sad. The one thing every people I know (or I've heard of) that had their house burn down complained about was that they lost all memories of 'before'. Not mentioning all the burnt paperwork of course, but this is just paperwork and it takes only time and effort to make it up again. Pics, Videos and sometimes an old piece of music not distributed anymore were at the top of the list.
Burning that and sending it to your parents and in laws is a minor charge and can prove usefull. Even only for a regular robbery.
Of course, if the earth was to explode, I woudn't care about that stuff anymore. But life is not all black and white. Most of the time, it is grayish.
The fact that you didn't hear about it proves that it doesn't work. How does such a band does its promotion? I've never heard of them and would damn like to see more bands doing the same. But how am I to know about them? I mean, unless thay all post a story to slashdot?
I just love this new way: 1. You download music (not DRM encumbered crap) legally. 2. You give back directly to the artist, as much as you see fit.
Thanks for the tip, I am listening to it right now. I am probably going to give a little donation as I like what I am hearing.
The one problem I see - and suffer from - about this distribution is exactly the fact that I didn't know about it! Are there more artists that distribute that way? How do one find them?
The GP was assuming that his method would be universal and as such would grant you the right of authenticating with the same key on every website. I, for one, don't use the same uid/pw on my bank account and on random websites I need to register to.
But look at macrovision. While almost all DVD players implements it, they all have a remote control sequence to disable it. So what the hell? Who is anyone kidding here?
This is the beauty. They can't decently propose music for sale without allowing you to burn a CD with it. So it comes down to: 1. Burn a CD 2. Rip the CD 3. Enjoy!!!!
They just don't realise that a mere recording from line-out to line-in in any half-decent sound card will sound as good as the original to 99.% of the users. So they should try and prevent that as well.
But I think what they are really up to is to try and prevent users to enjoy their music. Next thing to come, you won't be able to play it either, so there! No more copy protection problems.
It seems that these constraints are either unenforceable or just plain silly. Or both? But shhhhhhhhhhhh, don't tell anyone. Screwing up regular users (let's get real, they will be the ones screwed with ill-devised devices) seems to be their credo these days, so I say let them do it and we shall see if it proves to be a good business model.
So, the only difference between this new flash and ordinary flash is that this one can do LESS ? Yes, and that's the key to its success! Isn't it nice?

What is wrong about that again?
What is needed is a much better system than that. People will eventually become aware that blindly trusting anything anonymous is just plain stupid. This is a question of educating the population, and that usually takes a few generations. Patience will pay, I believe.
You should learn not to trust everything you read on /.
Nuclear winter might solve the global warming problem, though :P

Don't worry. It is very common to consider jokes on your kind as offensive. Believe me, I'm french ;)
You are right, I was being sarcastic. But the GP still has an interesting and insightful view on the perception of america across the world...
We're not perfect, but Jeez, look at the rest of the world ;) There was a french humorist that had that joke: "Every year sees its bunch of new cretins. But this year it's like next year's bunch is already there".

So standing in the rear of a ciname and watching a movie you haven't paid for isn't theft?

That was a good laugh, thanks.

History will tell.
So, the only difference between this new flash and ordinary flash is that this one can do LESS ?
Yes, and that's the key to its success! Isn't it nice?
While this is good in theory, this is utterly useless for anything else as virtually no website uses this.
That would be the way of course.
One problem, though is how can you keep track of key revocations through this system?
