If you want to read an ficitional account of every day life at Microsoft, try reading Douglas Coupland's Microserfs. The book describes a group of friends who watch the lawn get cut everyday or every other day at the same time to ensure the grass is at the same lenght and the email exchange between friends is incredibly funny. Here's a link to the official Douglas Coupland web site. Since I read the book several years ago, I included a posting from the Fatbrain web site: "Microserfs: a hilarious, fanatically detailed, and oddly moving book about a handful of misfit Microsoft employees who realize that they don't have lives and subsequently become determined to get lives inside the lightning-paced world of high-tech 1990s' American geek culture. Amid a Seattle backdrop of software corporate cultishness ("B-B-B-B-Bill!") and the financial terror of San Francisco and Silicon Valley tech startups, the members of Coupland's quirky ensemble "stick a piece of dynamite inside themselves, like a cartoon cat, in the hopes that when they reassemble their exploded pieces they will be somebody different"

    Customer: Why is this good?

    Customer: Maybe.

Salesperson: Well we have this nice Compac Persarios...this is a great home computer! My parents said I can get my first one as soon as I work here for a month.

    Customer: Okay.

Salesperson: Do you need a DVD? We have this great DVD players. Everyone has one. I'm going to get one for my parents as soon as I work here for a month.

    Customer: Okay.

Salesperson: Do you have an ISP?

    Customer: What's an ISP?

Salesperson: Hold on let me check with my mananger, Bob. He's cool. [Salesperson talks with Bob, the RadioShack manager] Its Microsoft's.

Customer: What do you mean by that?

Salesperson: Its' MicroSoft's ISP. Its great. I have this at home already.

Customer: Don't you need a computer before you get an ISP???

We have to first exam the company...

At my company, the software team is divided about 50%/50% in age (above 35 / below 35) and only two of us "kids" are not married. Of course the two of us don't have any long-term future plans at the company either. The more settled "folks" want to work for the company probably for the rest of their lives and the company will keep them.

If a Internet startup wants a staff, I agree that they would most likely hire "kids" because we really don't have much responsiblities besides playing StarCraft on Battle.net and beta testing Quake3. However they still need some veteran leadership.

A company can benefit by uniting a staff of veterans and rookies like any sports team, both can learn from a symbiotic relationship. Of course, on my software team, one coder is constantly weary of me because I go home, write some code and introduce it at work. She doesn't have the time for that because she's a mother and is raising her children.
