Is there a person in your office who always seems to be able to get the hardware/software to do what (s)he wants? Someone that all questions percolate towards when no one else can figure it out? Someone who is good at "researching issues"?
That person doesn't possess any special magical powers, they are simply competent. By contrast, the other people are what? Incompetent, yes.
No... The person who knows everything is the guru. And one person doesn't necessarily know everything in a given shop.
At my old job, I was one of the gurus. It didn't stop me from being fired by a manager whose rear I didn't kiss, unlike the other programmers in his group (whose noses were quite brown).
Having one person being asked all the questions can also indicate a fairly new group with only one 'old-timer' around. That person automatically becomes the guru.
If a company has an entry level position they want to fill, they are not going to shell out over twice the salary to get an experienced, older worker to fill that role. That would be absolutely stupid. They will try to find an entry level worker, either domestically, or a foreign national.
And in my area, entry level is somehow defined as 2-3 years experience. It took me almost a year to find another job, and I ended up working in the exact same subsection of the field I was in before.
I know someone with two degrees, and the best job he can find is at a copy center. Something is very wrong when that happens. And, yes, we have a ton of H1-B's in the area.
Anyway, most CS programs belong in technical schools, but that's another can o' worms.
Got to disagree with that statement.
Comp Sci always seemed, at the school I went to, to be more about theory and less about real application, with Computer Engineering being the other way around.
What tech schools should, and do, have is fairly decent programming coursework. Since they don't seem to care as much about theory, they sometimes produce better programmers.
What kind of society does slashdot think would be created as a result (seriously)?
A very pissed off, aggrivated society. It's been proven scientifically* that sleep deprivation raises aggresiveness. The human body needs to shut down every so often to recharge itself.

CGI has progressed to the point where a 'virtual' person can be added to a motion picture, and you'll be hard pressed to tell the difference between them and the 'real' people.
The 'unnaturalness' refered to is probably because the movement of such a virtual person is generally too smooth, and you're left sitting there wondering what it is that isn't quite right about the character.
And I don't even want to think about embedded scripts in the Word-link...
Too late, thought about it...
Would it be possible under this system to have a linked script that, say, erases a hard drive? My mailer (supposedly) blocks scripts from running from an e-mail, but there isn't any way I can see it finding a linked script embeded in a zipped Word doc...
I haven't gotten a letter yet, but I'll keep y'all updated. I've got a number of lawyers from all over the country (even Harvard professors) aching to defend this song if it goes to court.
Right on! Because by turning the code into a song, you've suddenly broken across the First Amendment barrier and are now protected by the Constitution.
Instead of Anonymous Coward, they should Slashdot should change the name to Anonymous Moron.
Look, most reporters don't know a thing about computers. Political leaks are caused by people. Someone's pissed off, and they tell a reporter things they shouldn't. Or they let something slip, like that judge last week, or they use the old 'the public has a right to know' arguement.
The security of the system isn't a problem in this case, it's the people involved who are making all the leaks. The most secure system in the world won't stop that.
Umm...if they're playing games, they're obviously not a "non-gamer". Everyone plays games wether it be politics, golf or UT. It all caters to entertaining your mind.
Actually, there are people who play games, and gamers. Two different animals. Sort of like the difference between hackers and haX0rz.
Gamers are the ones who argue about how 'realistic' the games are, complain about how the latest 'patch' ruins the game (and continue to play anyway), and generally goob over the latest release.
People who play games look at a new game, think it looks neat, and buy it.
Heh... Where I'm at, there are companies looking for people to fill entry level positions who have 3+ years VB experiance, and they only want to pay 30K a year...
WTF is up with that? What happened to entry level being right out of school? I've got three years experiance with C/C++ and a host of other skills, and it took me 8 months to get a new job after I was fired from my old one...

A short time ago, Corel purchased several 3D
packages from Metacreations. Anyone got clues
as to whether or not Corel is actually going
to do anything with them?

Carpe Jugulum, in particular, startled me with its darkness. Fifth Elephant was a bit better, but again, there was a sense of impending doom, almost what one might expect to feel when being chsed by wolves.
I do a lot of live action role-playing, including Vampire LARPS, and I found Carpe hilarious.
It is my firm belief that Prattchet encountered some of the Vampire LARPers at some point, and wrote them in... No other explanation makes sense...
of 24 yr olds with 15 yrs experience in a technology 3 yrs old...
Reminds me of an add I saw a while back...
"Applicatant must have 5 years experiance in Visual Basic 6.0..."

How does one tell the difference between a virus infection and a normal Windows installation?
The virus doesn't ask for the Windows disk to be inserted?

Nope. South Carolina. Admittedly, you can live pretty comfortablly on 30K a year here, but still...
Actually, tho, I'm not even doing C/C++ or VB. I'm doing Centura/Gupta and Oracle DB stuff... Which sucks in a completely different way...
