    Think about it. Your salary drops $5000 a year due to the influx of labor. Yet you can now purchase $6000 more a year in Goods and Services (G&S) due to the lower costs that the companies pass on to the consumer. So you have benefited from the cheaper products. Same applies if you move to a new area and take a salary cut. You may actually be better off because G&S are significantly cheaper.

    Except the companies don't cut the prices at which they sell the items, they usually raise them.

    Anyone remember when Coke said they were raising their prices a few months back? Pepsi's reply was to raise their prices as well, to remain competative.... WTF?

    You'd think that by keeping their prices lower, they could pick up more market share, thus gaining even more money.

    Other businesses work the same way, a reduction in costs, say by reducing the wages of the IT staff doesn't translate into lower costs for the consumers, just a better bottom line for the company.

    I've had BellSouth DSL for a couple of months now, without a single problem. I had to do the complete install myself, saving me about $150, but it was fairly easy. The one problem I had was dealt with by, surprisingly, a customer service rep who actually knew what he was talking about.

    So, all in all, I like it, even though it means I get my daily ration of spam faster...

    I meant when it would actually send the spam...

    The ones you mentioned only appear during installation, and given that most people accept the defaults when installing (because they are sheep), they won't know any better.

    Could Microsoft possibly be more clueless? That's one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever heard.


    IANAL, but couldn't the MS assumption that a given user 'wants' the people in their address book to try MS be considered false advertising?

    I mean, couldn't it be considered fraud or something???

    How about that for a virii... A script that makes Outlook think that you've changed your e-dress and spams everyone.

    Not that I would, or could, do such a thing...

    ...but I always thought that sending updates of e-mail addresses should be done by the person changing their account.

    And while you can 'opt out', wouldn't it be better if the system popped up one of those annoying MS dialogs asking if you want everyone to be informed?

    Or even better, allows you to pick and choose who you want informed, and allow you to enter your own text informing them, with the MS 'standard' being one of the options...

    Or does that make too much sense?

    Yep, but they sell.

    And let's face it, "a serious software engineer" should have no trouble getting one. If I had the time and money, I'd get one, as it would probably get me a 7-10K raise at a different job.

    Actually, MS hasn't been split yet. The judge ruled that way, but we have years of Appeals (and possiblly Supreme) Court decisions to go.

    IANAL, so I don't know what that would do to all the companies they've "borg'd" since then...

    Well, realistically, why wouldn't they be upset? It's equivalent to, say, Ford Motor company reacquiring Hertz, and finding out that all their executives drive Cadies...

    Actually, it isn't that difficult. Motion sensors are relatively cheap, and it's fairly easy, even via DIP switches, to have thresholds set for this... It would probably cost me about a thousand dollars or more, and take a couple of months in building and testing, but it could be done fairly easily.

    All I need now is the money and the time... :)

    What I don't understand about all of the fuss over Carnivore I've read on sites like /. is that essentially it isn't any different from already existing methods of surveillance like phone tapping. If you don't trust the FBI to use Carnivore properly...

    It's not that I don't trust the FBI... Well, actually, I don't. But that's because I don't trust the US government in the form of the elected officials or governmental agencies, as they have proven, time and time again that they cannot be trusted, either to keep their promises, or to not cover up 'incidents' that would make them look bad.

    Of course, that doesn't make them that different from any 'normal' person on the planet.

    And, having said that, there isn't a country on the planet I would rather live in...

    Can't we make use of the constitutional rights to exercise religion for this? If we formally worship the DeCSS code we have a constitutional right to spread it to other believers, right?

    What's scary about this is, it might actually work. Tho, I would suggest Discordianism (Hail Eris! All Hail Discordia!) or the Church of Sub-Genius ( Slack! ) rather than the Scientologists, as DeCSS doesn't have Thetans, and they wouldn't be interested.

    So, is my DeCSS tshirt illegal to wear? Are they going to try and take it from me? What if I go out of the country wearing it? Inquiring minds want to know!

    The T-Shirts (I'm assuming the ones from Copyleft?) should be fine. IANAL, but they would seem to fall under protected 'speech' in that they express support for one side of a legal/social issue, and are not inherantly obscene. (Especially since the Supreme Court never defined obscenity.)

    What is the point of authenticity in Olympic games goods? Unless you actually win a medal, the rest is just junk that will not survive the decade.

    1) The counterfeit items are more likely to be junk and not last.

    2) The IOC isn't getting a cut of the counterfeit stuff, and we all know how much they like their kickbacks... err, bribes... errr, cut. Yeah, that's it.... They just want their cut.

    Good point. Also knowing how they screwed up would be nice, but they aren't going to share specifics because of all the script kiddies out there.

    Makes me wonder, tho... Are they going to start stickering government agencies the same way resturants are?

    Guess what? The defendants did raise the issue. However, oddly enough, the rules stipulate that the judge himself has the ultimate say in these matters, and in our case, he just refused to recuse himself...

    Which, according to a law student friend of mine, may, just may, be one of the ways to get a new trial. Part of it depends on who they draw for the appeals judges.

    Just from my look at the transcript, (IANAL) it seemed that the judge was fairly biased against 2600, which the appeals court can also take a look at.

    Out of curiousity, does anyone know how often this judge has been reversed on appeal? Might be a useful indicator...

    ...Tipper's involvement in the parent's group that wanted to have music ratings a few years back...

    The PMRC, Parent's Music Resource Committee, was started by Tipper after she found her daughter listening the the Prince song, Little Nikki. Rather than actually exercise some parenting skills, she decided to blame the music industry.

    During the series of hearing that were eventually called, one of the artists testifing, Frank Zappa, promissed that his next album would be the most obscene thing he ever produced.

    In the 'stickering' mania that followed all of the hearings, his next album was indeed marked as obscene, and not for anyone under 18.

    It was an instramental jazz album.

    As I recall, MacD(?) was working on one called the Delta-Clipper, or some such....

    But I haven't heard anything in about 3 years... Anyone got any information? All the web articles I find are from three years ago, or I wouldn't ask...
