  1. Re:2 cents on How Solar Sails Work · · Score: 2

When you've got a solar sail many kilometers on a side, you're not at all worried about holes from even medium-large (think basketball) sized meteors.

Interacting with something that far away is just not gonna happen. Keep in mind that once the signal comes from the spacecraft and is received by the ground station, the spacecraft is already FAR past the article of interest, and moving at Ludicrous Speed (tm). Turning around for another look is not an option. Imagine trying to make a cannonball go back for another look. : )

  2. Re:Sail Direction on How Solar Sails Work · · Score: 2

Think about it this way. You've got a target free to move in two dimensions sitting on a pool table. Roll pool balls at said target. The direction of travel of the target will vary depending on the angle of the target to the incoming track of the pool ball. The pool ball will rebound off the target (angle of incidence equals angle of reflection) and the target will move away from the impact in the direction of the bisector of the angle of the ball's incoming and outgoing tracks. Cornfused yet? : )

Most sails (unless you're running directly away from the wind with your main on one side and your jib on the other, or using a spinnaker) work by the Bernoulli effect...they're airfoils. Solar sails are pure Newtonian kinematics...f=ma.

So you think they put it in the box, never having even booted up the program. Nobody in the company had ever SEEN the app on the screen, right? I think that's silly. Are there other users of the program who didn't comply with the license? Sure! But they at least had the decency to refrain from reselling it.

So you don't equate slimy, underhanded behaviour with Wrong? I didn't say it was illegal, but how can you say that they weren't taking advantage of the author? How can you argue that taking advantage of people is not Wrong?

Did the company send the writer an email telling them how they liked the program? No. Therefore, they were breaking the terms of the license.

The way the suit at the company dodged around the issue, trying to argue that the program wasn't very good, so they shouldn't compensate the author, is pretty damn slimy.

The Internet is about niches. It's not about selling dishwasher detergent and Pepsi (although those companies would disagree), it's about selling imported Japanese giant robot models and European release CDs. Markets that are too small to survive in any geographic region can be profitably addressed by the Internet. The same goes for ideas...the pre-digested pap can be replaced by discussion, collaboration, and exploration. Moreover, the mere fact that there are millions of voices speaking is far preferable to the monoculture popular media we're putting up with now. If all the voices start sounding alike, that's not necessarily bad...consensus does not limit freedom, but hollering one message from one source in everybody's ears 24/7 does.
