s/GPL/free/; there are other free licenses out there, and more importantly, licenses out there that are more free than the GPL:P

Dilbert Hole plagiarized?

More than half of these cartoons seem to have been lifted from Tristan Farnon's Leisuretown comic strip "A Comedy Crisis". I don't know if rotten.com is associated with him at all, but I saw no references, and the Leisuretown strip came long before this Dilbert Hole thing. (plus, there was added humor from context in Leisuretown.).
(Personally, I found the ones from Leisuretown and one or two of the new ones to be really funny). -- Kevin Doherty kdoherty+slashdot@jurai.net
One of the greatest advantages to MP3s IMHO is the fact that from now on, you'll no longer have the problem of something being out of print. MP3s allow for indefinite archival and trivial duplication, making having to search all over for someone who not only has the CD you want but is willing to part with it for a reasonable price a thing of the past. -- Kevin Doherty kdoherty+slashdot@jurai.net
There were already enlightenment 0.14 debs, and Jules Bean has been making CVS E 0.15 debs that work just fine. I believe they're at http://www.debian.org/~jules/ -- Kevin Doherty kdoherty+slashdot@jurai.net
He also took over maintenance of the Jargon File (another must-read) from Guy Steele, and has maintained it for a number of years before the term "Open Source" ever came into usage. He had already set a precedent for documenting hacker nature, so it's not unusual that he was thrust into the position of spokesman. -- Kevin Doherty kdoherty+slashdot@jurai.net
Looking on pricewatch, a PIII 450 can be found for cheaper than 550$, whereas the lowest prices for the PII 450 are around 500$. The price difference isn't really as significant as the article makes it out to be. Of course, this is all kind of silly considering a Celeron 400 can easily be had for 150$ (and a K6-2 400 can be had for the same price). -- Kevin Doherty kdoherty+slashdot@jurai.net
As an aside, I would strongly recommend against buying on eBay or online auction places in general for older non-pc hardware, as the prices tend to be absurdly high.
misc.forsale.computers.workstation is a pretty good newsgroup for buying hardware as well. -- Kevin Doherty kdoherty+slashdot@jurai.net
If I care that much about style in my computer I'll just customize it myself. paint the case/keyboard, etc.. I can't see actually making a purchase of one computer over another because of style unless the two were exactly the same in all other ways. -- Kevin Doherty kdoherty+slashdot@jurai.net

The article explains why it's unfeasible for the CPU to have a frequency detector on-board. Re-read it.

You can find rather reasonable prices on old Sun hardware (IPX's, LX's, Classics, Sparc 5s, etc.) at www.gstek.com
www.reputable.com has good SGI prices and www.deepspacetech.com has good prices on NeXT hardware if you're interested in it.
