  1. Isn't It Ironic... Don't You Think? on RH7 Crashes In Three Weeks (But Fixed) · · Score: 1

If only the fix had been released earlier, perhaps the Update Agent could have repaired itself before anyone knew anything was amiss.

  2. Legal Buttmonkeys on CueCat At It Again · · Score: 5

I think this whole thing is worth it just to see the word flyingbuttmonkeys appear 8 separate times under the Kenyon & Kenyon official letterhead.

  3. Disagree With License? on Digital Convergence Changes EULA, and Gets Cracked · · Score: 2

So if I don't agree with the licensing terms for this unsolicited mailing, what can I do with it? I certainly can't break it into bits or burn it up. That would violate the "disassembly" clause. I can't even throw it in the trash since that would be an illegal "distribution" of the device.

What's a poor law-abiding consumer to do? I guess I'll just have to keep it in my closet.

Speaking of Cryptonomicon, I love the image they included of the jailed hacker. Very reminiscent of Randy Waterhouse in the Philippine jail, right down to the box containing the Van Eck phreaking antenna under the laptop.

  5. Re:Freedom of contract on The Right To Read: Time Limited Textbooks · · Score: 1

Yes, but the apparent problem here is that the transformation of the market for textbooks implied by the following:

Publishers are guaranteed 100% market penetration at partner schools who opt to implement the Vital Source system. Purchase of all included titles is mandated by the universities.

When an educational institution has been incented to sign such a contract, students who wish to vote with their dollars will have to choose a different institution rather than simply a different textbook supplier.

  6. Analogy to Burglary on More On Kaplan's Ruling Making Links Illegal · · Score: 1

MPAA's Jack Valenti is quoted as saying "(2600 publisher Eric Corley) is transporting individuals electronically to locations in order to facilitate the illegal copying of DVDs. His behavior is analogous to driving someone to a home so that they may burglarize the home."

I can't say I like the analogy, but if he's going to make it, I would say it's more like driving someone across the border into Mexico (or Canada, or wherever) so they can purchase tools with which to burglarize the home.

  7. Re:30 hour days? on The Web And The Olympics · · Score: 1

By this logic, American Samoa, in the GMT-11 timezone (just 3 hours away from Sydney, but across the International Date Line) would be considered 21 hours away.

I think the absolute difference in time is the overriding factor in determining the feasibility of live feeds. It may well be that NBC won't provide live coverage to American Samoa, but it'll be because of audience size rather than an insurmountable 21 hour time difference.
