The first target system to successfully boot is the 3Com PalmPilot using a TRG SuperPilot Board with a custom boot-loader created specifically for our Linux/PalmPilot port. It is currently maintained by co-creator D. Jeff Dionne.
So don't sell the Palm system short. Just because noone else has pursued this doesn't mean it's not possible.

Besides, do I really want Linux on my Palm anyway? not hardly as the PalmOS is already optimized to work and it works oh so well!

Currently, if I see or hear of a product advertized somewhere, the odds are pretty good that I can guess companyname.com, and I typically get a hit. It's not perfect, but it works more often than not. With this new scheme, I will have to rely soley on a search engine because the relative "intuitivness" if current dot-com names will be blown out the door.

Additionally, if I was a business, I would have to register a ton of new domain names because of the lack of intuitivness. It just seems like a way for this guy to make tons of money at everyone's expense.

  15. Re:Let's recap. on Courts Gives Napster 72-Hour Deadline · · Score: 1

The big difference is that when you alter, upgrade and sell or give away your car, you no longer retain posession. With Napster, you are providing copies to others. Sure, you could lend your car to someone else to use, but then you couldn't use it while it is being lent.

Using your example, Napster is more like taking your car that you purchased and for no cost to you duplicating completely in every detail including the branding, color, VIN number, etc. and making it available to others take and drive as they will.

In this analogy, would the auto makers of your original car be able to sue you for producing (copying) a car that is identical to the one you purchased and making it available to the general public for free?

(Obviously, arguments could be made to differing bit-rates, sound quality, length, etc. when it comes to defining what a "copy" is.)

I wonder what the buzz would be if Napster had nothing to so with music but instead was designed to freely share copies of Office, OS-X, Quicken, Quake, etc. The software industry would come come down so hard and so fast that your head would spin. The general public would say "Hmmm, that's software pirating. That's not legal. Shut 'em down". Not the same with the public opinion on music.

  16. Re:Pig Latin is not a copyright protection scheme on AIMster Uses Pig Latin Encryption to Defeat RIAA · · Score: 1
Then by the exact same argument CSS is NOT a copyright protection mechnism. CSS just mangles the contents of the files through encryption, it doesn't hinder the direct bit-for-bit copy of the files in any way.
While "technically" that may be true, the purpose of each mechanism is entirely different:. CSS is designed to prevent unauthorized copying of copyrighted assets.

Aimster's Pig Latin Encoder is designed to enable the unauthorized copying and distribution of someone else's copyrighted assets.

I would speculate that a court would side with preventing rather than enabling unauthorized copying.
  17. Re:According to the Bible (for what it's worth) on Is Computer Sex Adultery? · · Score: 1
If you are like most Christians, who believe that God and the Holy Spirit inspired the key points of the Bible, then you would make the correct cultural/social adaptation of this passage automatically - specifically that even looking at another person with lust is adulterous.

(Not directed at the author specifically, but in general...)
My problem with that thinking is that values, morality, and ethics become relative and determined by the latest whim and desire. The Bible provides a baseline from which you can measure values, morality and ethics.

Whether you are a Fundamentalist or believe simply in inspiration, I believe that the Bible is simply saying that we need to exercise self-control and to honor those to whom we have committed. Focusing your sexual passions (lust) on another is a detraction from what should be your marital focus: Your wife. What a better way to show her your love and respect than to honor her by focusing your passions and desires on her.

Lusting after another is putting your wife in a lower place that she does not deserve. If, for some reason, you don't think that she desreves it, then you need to take a hard look within yourself and get your priorities corrected because more often than not, it is individual selfishness that causes a husband to put his passiopns on someone else other than his wife.
  18. Re:TiVo is a better deal on A Look At The Panasonic ShowStopper · · Score: 2

As I see it, TiVo has three great features:
    It pauses live TV
    It time-shifts shows
It gets to know you and chooses shows for you

    It's a philosophical difference:

TiVo: Record what you want to watch and watch what you want when you want to watch it and TiVo will provide additional shows that may match your preferences by monitoring your viewing habits.

ReplayTV: Record what you want to watch and watch what you want when you want to watch it and provide the viewer with powerful tools to let the viewer choose what he wants to record and watch.

ReplayTV provides you with very robust searching and filtering functions that to choose the shows you want to watch. You can search by Title, Director, Actors, Descriptions, etc. You can search for all occurances of a show as well. ReplayTV's "Zones" feature provides very robust search and filter functions allowing you to do very extensive "topical" searching. From the search results from any of these functions, you can set up single, recurring, and multiple recordings very easilly.

While TiVo does offer the "Suggestions" feature where an algorithm records programs by trying to match to your preferences based on monitoring your viewing habits, ReplayTV instead gives the viewer powerful tools to choose what he wants to record.

Tivo + DVD = easy rental backup

Actually, some people already do this with ReplayTV. (Not sure if TiVo can do it.) Just plug the DVD output into a ReplayTV input and initiate an immediate recording. Then, you can watch the DVD content whenever you want!

The earlier ReplayTV models completely ignore MacroVision.

The latest ReplayTV models will record MacroVision programs which you can watch, but they pass the MacroVision to the output so if you record, the MacroVision goes with it.

The current Showstopper versions will not play anything recorded with MacroVision, so you can't do what was suggested.

More importantly, be careful of licensing issues. YOU could send all the data you want over the internet from your packet station, but what about others contacting you? You mentioned ICQ. I believe that the person on the other end would have to be licensed to contact YOU. Even though the packet equipment is yours, and you are really only concerened about YOUR connection, the person on the other end of the contact would still need to be licensed because he too is ultimatly using your packet station.

It's kind of a gray area, but just be careful...

  22. Graffiti = Heads-up writing on Alternative to Graffiti Input? · · Score: 2

One of the *really* nice features of Graffiti is that it provides for "heads-up" writing. I can hole my pilot with one hand and write with the other while looking at who I am talking with. This *really* adds to the experience, and isn't distracting.

Sure, I make mistakes, but I tend to edit them later.

Must of the Graffiti replacements have been the "keyboard-type" that require you to be looking at what you are tapping.

YMMV, but for me, Graffiti is the most seamless.
