  1. Re:Root RAID on Linux 2.2.15 Released · · Score: 1

Hell, i've tried 2 or 3 times to get it just RAID working on 2.2.14 and i cant. i've got to keep backstepping to 2.2.13ac3 to get it to go. The annoying thing is i follow the HOWTO exactly and it wont work. All i have to change is the kernel version and it stops :(
Any sites that have up to date RAID info would be great if you could post links. I've looked everywhere (well except for where they are).

I mean, what is the point of sanity.com.au?? I can go to KMart (large retailer, it's probably worldwide or something and i made an ass of myself) and buy all the new releases at the same price, and not pay freght!!
Buy overseas, screw the domestic economy. It's a capitalist world, and every person for themselves!

  3. Re:Easily solved on U.K. Pirate Broadcasters Steal Car Radio Listeners · · Score: 1

I have a nifty little CD player with RDS support even though I am in Australia where we dont have it yet, and I can turn it on or off as i see fit. It's in the manual somewhere :)
It just defeats the purpose of RDS, the overlays and TRUE emergency information if it's disabled.
But then again, I have never heard a pirate radio station here in Australia. I have never even heard of one on the news.
Maybe I just lead a sheltered life.

  4. "Long uptime is evil" or "gee isnt my system open" on Server Uptimes Ranked · · Score: 3
Think about this. Some person is amazingly proud of the fact they are running kernel 2.0.18. How many vulnerabilites does this server have? What is kernel 2.0 upto? 2.0.37?? how many DOS attacks is this thing vulnerable to??

I have no idea about FreeBSD but i am guessing that either it has less time between kernel updates, the version our leader is running is the last in the stable series and FreeBSD has moved on to a new series or it too is vulnerable to any bugs or attacks that have been fixed in newer kernels.

I am proud of the fact that my servers have an uptime of only 30 days or so. Because i know that I am performing regular maintenence on them. They crash rarely, usually due to hardware failure, but I reboot them frequently to make sure they are running all the latest fixes eg a new kernel install.

This is like saying "WooHoo my bog standard RedHat 5.0 box has been up for 2 years!!" Crackers ahoy! Vulnerable target sited!! A quick search of any crack DB will give you root access in less time then it will take you to make a cup of coffee.

I would expect any NT box should have a maximum uptime dating back to the release of Service pack 5. (Dont know about 6. A few admins i know are avoiding that like the plague)

The same applies to Linux and or FreeBSD or whatever. If you fail to apply critical patches to your system, most likely in production use, why in god's name should you get kudo's off the hacker/admin community for a job well done??

  5. MERCED EPIC v DEC ALPHA 21364 on Troubles with Merced · · Score: 1

And the worst part is, we need gcc to be able to support it thouroughly to be able to run linux and take full advantage of its capabilities.
I think I'll buy an alpha. It will probably cost less anyway. It's supported by linux (or vice versa) and we know the damn thing works.

  6. MERCED EPIC v DEC ALPHA 21364 on Troubles with Merced · · Score: 1

I read the projected performance of the Dec Alpha 21364 from the Digital people (so its probably marginally biased) and the alpha blew the merced clear out of the water. Digital have been working on the alpha and its revisions for how many years now 5, 6, 7 ?? so one would expect it to be pretty refined. As well i think it will support upto 64 way SMP for serious machines.
It would be nice to know how many SMP cpus you can run with merced at once. If your building a serious server , multithreading and smp will probably save the day over multiple instruction pipelines any day.
It is interesting tho that the EPIC spec can support a virtually limitless number of instruction pipelines simultaenusly (at least according to the Ars Technica review) so if this compiler based strategy works, and chip densities increase (as they will) we could see some very , very wide CPUS.
