I wonder whether Bill might have abandoned his idea had Microsoft's installed software base catastrophically fallen over with the turn into the year 2000. After all, it might have strongly looked like wimping out under those circumstances.

Contrary to what the Wired article says, the machine was stolen from Bletchley Park (that's near Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire), not London.
