Exactly. A lot of them are run by research scientists for a corporation that will benefit by keeping the computed data to themselves and later marketing a drug for $10 a pill to old people.
In that case, I personally think we are better off without that drug.
I'm always a little sketchy on joining these distributed computing projects.
Something about my computer time being put to work so that a bunch of scientists can invent a new drug and make lots of money; or put out a new study and get some fame. It just doesn't seem right.
I've always wondered why it is so difficult to vote against a player in Counter-Strike. You have to open the console and type listplayers to find the cheater's number, then type vote #### whatever number he is. A lot of people are too lazy to do this or don't know how. Some don't even know how to get to the console.
Game programmers should aknowledge the fact that there are cheaters and implement an easier way for other players to vote him off the server.
I was actually thinking of the possibility of using one or more of the Mindstorms light sensors to emulate a CueCat. Instead of starting a new thread, I looked to see if anyone had thought of using Mindstorms with CueCat. Your idea, although not related to mine, uses both toghther.
This is how the Mindstorms CueCat would work.
It detects light/dark by how much light is reflected back from its LED. I don't know if it would be precise enough to scan the bar codes though, because the bars might be too close together.
Well if you happened to actually look at all of the screenshots, you will see that the disk has 932MB taken up after windows is installed. That doesn't seem too bad to me.

I got my Lego Mindstorms for Christmas 1998 but I haven't used it much. I think I will take it out of the closet and hack around with it.
Visual Basic is a good way to program your Lego Brick. You install the Mindstorms OCX and then you can do what you want. There is a big PDF manual too. This way you can control the RCX with more precision.
I have compiled some links to Mindstorms pages and direct links to files for those who fear the cookies.
Why do companies try things like this? Are they stupid or just brasin (sp). They are going to get sued. It's going to be like the MP3.com ruling. "...they don't have the authority to determine if the content for them...deliberate copyright infringement..."
Why 64K? I would rather pay cheap for a 28.8K connection than something that much. If I were on a plane and using the internet it would probably be for email and other low bandwith activities. I would not be downloading porn movies or other movies.
"Earlier Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal cited FCC staffers involved in the review process who said regulatory approval centered around opening Instant Messaging and high-speed Internet cable line access to competitors."
IMHO opening the cable networks is much more significant than the AIM issue. This would allow for competition in the cable ISP market which is *literally* impossible at this time.
The training for the trip will probably not be the most exciting thing. They will most likely make it look more exciting than it is. They won't air the jogging and swimming parts of the training. The whole show will involve those things that bounce around like the amusement park rides.
Another exciting point will focus on the use of the space toilets.
It sounds really not fun to watch, but people will watch it.
It's definitely a better idea to have the CD. I'm sure it works fine having it on CD-ROM. Here are some reasons.
As the other reply says, dial-up access is expensive in the UK.
CD-ROMs are faster than the fastest internet connection.
Movies and animations can be used on the CD.
650 MB would take a long time to download.
CD-ROM distribution would be cheaper than hosting a website and allowing hundreds of people to download 600MB or so each. (even if they had the time and money).
I see it like the MP3 player / minidisc scenario. The minidiscs are far superior in storage and quality, but people like me use the MP3 players because they are newer and use newer techonology.
Good find Danga. I see it!

What it should do is pause the game entirely for all players untill they vote. Kind of like in Australia where it is the law to vote.

I had something like that on 3.1 called TabWorks. It was pretty nice. Every desktop folder was a tab on the screen.
Sadly, someone actually has a Windows Logo tattooed on them.
Wow that's really sad. I think the tatoo might fall under fair use or something like that. BTW, are you sure that is a head?
Ohhhh I get it now. Floppy D... like Micro-soft.
Everyone named Bob had to change their names. I remember. Joke
It seems to me that a 3.5 in floppy is a form of removable media.
It's a "beta". Therfore it is also a "good idea".

Looks pretty nice. The people will buy it and thats all that matters isn't it?

An easy way to make sure you're not doing anything L33T would be to check that you are using Win 95,98 or Me.

Who modded the previous down? It is not only true, it is a little bit funny.
Did anyone read the article?

I hope you don't mind I put that sig in my AIM profile. It is so great.
Thanks for clearing that up for me my fellow American. NY,NY,USA

That kind of logic frightens me. Keep things secret to avoid problems. That seems so...United States.
