  1. I don't think WinXP reports VBR bitrates correctly on Rumors of Mini iPods · · Score: 1

i just encoded a cd the other day in vbr (lame's alt preset standard) and the average bitrate of the files is between 154kbps-196kbps, yet winxp tells me that the files are anywhere between 400-500kbps, and some seem to be read as 128kbps (they're not).. so i'd say winxp probably isn't calculating the values in vbr correctly. and if my results are any indication, i'd guess your mp3s are actually encoded at somewhere around an average bitrate of 100kbps or less. at the bitrate i used, a 70-minute cd takes up about 90MB, so 2gigs is roughly 1500 minutes of music, or 375-400 4-minute songs.

  2. This is a Serial ATA drive on Enterprise-class ATA Drives · · Score: 5, Informative

This is a Serial ATA drive, which the article even mentions (second paragraph: "...Enterprise Serial advanced technology attachment..."), but then proceeds to call it an ATA drive (instead of SATA) for the rest of the article.

Here's a somewhat less misleading article.

  3. Re:Magneto Optical Disk ? on Philip's SFFO 3cm 4Gig Optical Discs · · Score: 1

Minidiscs are magneto-optical, and they run ~$3 apiece. Granted, that's only ~140MB, but they've been around a decade. My guess as to why 5Gb MO discs are so expensive is because they can get away with, i.e., MO discs are used primarily by institutions that are tied to their hardware, and it's simply cheaper or easier to keep buying expensive media than replace the hardware.

Besides that, I don't thinks these Philips discs are MO. DVD-RW isn't MO, and these discs are just smaller, denser versions of CD/DVD-RW.

  5. Re:Another interview with Hideo Kojima: on Interview With Hideo Kojima, Designer of Metal Gear Solid 2 · · Score: 1

Not quite. Besides the Metal Gear series, he made 2 other games. And I bet you that you can't name one of them.

Snatcher and Policenauts were the games, and the reason not many people are aware of them is because one was released on a system that never enjoyed much popularity (Snatcher, SegaCD), and the other was never even released in the US (Policenauts, Japanese Playstation). Both were critically acclaimed games however. I can't speak for Policenauts (which was a continuation of the Snatcher universe), but I've played Snatcher from beginning to end and must say it's a fine game. It plays more like an interactive comic book than a real game, with a storyline that borrows heavily from the movie Bladerunner. A quick search on google turned up this site for anyone interested in finding out more.

I do agree that Carmack is among the best programmers out there, but Kojima definitely has an edge up at directing; Carmack makes great game engines, Kojima makes great cinematic games.
