  1. Another Solution on Linux Drivers For Free Barcode Scanner Cease-And-D... · · Score: 2

One solution would be for anyone who has registered the software and submitied personal information to contact the company and demand that they remove that information. Federal Law says that all personal information about you is your property and must be returned/destroyed at your request (with a few loop-holes for law enforcment, etc) Thats right your medical records, school records, etc are all your property and must be given to you on request. If everyone registers and then demends that there information be removed we can bog down their servers/work force and make them really pay!

After actually reading the article (firewall problems) I can admit that I am truly botherd by the MPAA. They are using scare tactics to try and win there case. With no thought of due process or of an individuals right to free speech they are systematically trying to eliminate the material that they feel is objectional. not to mention they want our personal info from the ISP so they can come after us. Kind-of reminds me of the Nazi's... Just FYI, I happen to be married to a lawyer and after looking at the letter she says that all that they are trying to do is scare. If someone actually tries to fight this and takes them to court, again, this sort of thing will stop. They are using the weight of all those big words and threats of legal action the only "may" occure to force their will. They are hoping, and it looks like it is working, that ISP's and schools will give in rather than fight. I'm going to fight! Let worldnet try and shut me down!

In ancent Rome everything was illegal until there was a precedent for it. Basically the first person to do something got punished and then after that just about anyone could do it because it had been done before. I think the 2600 has set the precedent for this case. They stuck to there guns and kept the link up under all of the pressure that could be brought against them. I will go home tonight and put a link from my page to the source, Will you? Remember the first acts of defiance are the most important ones. It is up to us, fellow /. readers, to get the ball rolling and tell them that we will not stand for this, we will not quietly sit by and let them take away one of the fundemental rights of the internet simply because they used poor encryption. We will not be made to pay for their mistake! Post the source code on your site! Link to the Code! Together we can take on the man, and basically make it not worth his time to pursue this any further!

  4. Assumptions on Has Linux Lapped Apple As Competition For Redmond? · · Score: 1

You know what happens when you assume.../br> This artice makes a few assumptions, 1: that Gnome is the "Standard" Desktop, and 2: that Linux is in competition with the Macintosh, and finally 3: that the Mac platform is on its way out. First off, there is no such thing as a "standard" desktop for linux, We are lucky if there is a standard anything for linux, but I know there is no standard desktop. If anything the open source nature dictates that there will never be a standard desktop, let alone a standard distribution. Secondly, Linux and Macintosh are not in competition. They both have their place, but right now, they cannot replace or compete with each other. Mac is the choice for Imaging, Video editing, and the Artistic group. While linux is the choice for power users, or people who want/need better performance and stability. Finally, the Mac platform is not on the way our. It has been slowly gaining marketshare for the past several years and shows no real sign of weakening. The atitiude that the mac is on the way out has been around for 6-7 years and is just a carry-over of the old PC-Mac conflict from the late 90's. If anything the emergence of Linux into the main stream is going to help the mac platform by showing users that there is a choice in platforms.

I think that you are lumping too many things together. I will admit that the existence of God is a major choice, with a right or wrong answer. Once you make that major choice, everything else is about preference. When you decide what socks to put on, you have already assumed that socks exisit. Just like when you "choose" your religion you have already assumed that god exisits or does not exist. it's almost impossible to be wrong about socks and amazingly possible to be wrong about the nature of the universe, that does not change the fact that after you decide they exist (socks or God) everything else is just personal preference.

Actually picking a RELIGION is the same as picking socks, it's a matter of preference, either you are a catholic, a baptist, a muslum, a jew, or a hindu. They all believe in the existance of a god or gods, it's simple a matter of which god you are going to pick. The TRUTH you are talking about is that either there is a god (or gods) or their isn't, that has nothing to do with the fact that you are a catholic, a jew, or a hindu.

I don't care for some of their business practices ('It's a standard only if it matches what we want') This might be like saying "buddism is OK, but the budda sucks rocks!" but it is my opinion

It all comes down to a matter of personal preference, and there is no real way for a clear "Best" one to be found, they are all good in different ways.

This realy is an example of history in action. Russia, or that geographic region, has always been gun ho for the military. It is the only way they survived, in just recent history look at Napolean or even Hitler, who attacked Russia because he felt their army was weak and unattentive because they were fighting Japan in the east. A strong military has become part of Russias cultural Identity, as much as owning a car has become part of America's cultural Identity.

Plus you don't see the U.S. backing down from it's "cold war" thinking. Yea, We need a 10 Billion + Missile defense system!

I hate to say this, because it will sound like an NRA sound bite but... Democracy is a full time job. We must be ever vigalant to protect what democracy that we have and do all in out power to make our society a more democratic one. For the past few months people have b*tched and moaned about the DMCA and the damage that it has done but how many of those people were actually out fighting against that act before it was passed! How many people are writting there congressmen to ask them to repeal the law? Technology can be the ultimate aid to democracy, more information can be shown to more people faster than ever before but most people don't take advantage of it. We are to busy reading userfriendly and playing diablo rather than checking up on our congressman. If you are going to whine about the fate of technology and democracy get out and do something about it. Whew! I'm glad thats over. The national conventions were a joke because the parties do not want to be embarrased. When we vote in primaries (which everyone should do) we only vote for party delegates, not for the actual people. In the "old days" the delegates that got elected to the convention could vote for anyone they want, not the people we told them to. It would be real bad for a party to say "GW Bush" is our next candidate, and then for all the delegated to get to the convention and elect McCain. The moral of the story... Quit B*tchen and get out and do something!
