For each system's capability comparisons, why not let an independent reviewer review the two systems and then report on that? There is no purpose in reporting an article on DC vs PS2 that was written by a Seg-affiliated site. That's like reporting on a MS review that Linux sucks: it's pointless....

then again, i guess it fits in with rest of the topics today...

  15. why the gaming market is attacked on Interview With Gary Gygax About Game Violence · · Score: 2

The reason people attack the gaming market is that it's an easy target...

Video/computer games are notorious for their gratuitous violence and lots of blood and gore, along with the fact that the primary users are children.

It's a lot easier to tell people that it's the "violent games" that are causing their children to become violent and socially maladjusted, rather than tell the truth, which is that they have bad parenting skills and don't teach their children the morals that they (children) need to learn.

  16. it's not because of schools on Education: Does U.S. 'Catch-Up' At The College Level? · · Score: 1

I would tend to believe that the knowledge learned in the U.S. is primarily not due to college, but rather independent study (and work-related study). Excluding the top schools in the U.S. (MIT, Stanford, Princeton, etc.) the educational system here (especially pre-college - high school and elementary) is terrible. However, there is also a huge amount of commercial competition: private companies are very willing to fund research projects in the hopes of a new discovery, and professionals have to be on the leading edge of technoloy in order to be even considered adequately knowledgeable.

IMO, the schools provide the degrees which allow the step into the commercial atmosphere, and it's the on-the-job pressure combined with the desire of becoming an icon that forces people to work hard, and hence make important discoveries.

there's another company doing the same thing (Qrium - check out the link) they're also making computers that *LOOK COOL* in order to grab the market from the majority of society (chances are that these'll sell better because the run Windoze)...Sony is probably trying to get the amrket from the businesspeople who need laptops but don't really know what kind (buy something *CUTE*)

anyway, it's not really a surprise: once something hits mainstream, you sell it for its visible qualities, not specs (ie: most people would buy a car that looks nice over a car that looked worse but ran a little better)

    regarding the market...

The concept of sign up for our ISP and get a "free" computer was wildly popular...How about, run our software and get a free computer?

    This has MANY advantages, including:
    1) It really is free, you don't have to pay for the ISP service (which was more like financing)
    2) Parents can get computers just for their kids, and while the kids are in school/asleep the computers can be running various routines and be paying themselves off

In turn, this would help increase the number of people with computers, as poor people wouldn't have to pay for the computer, just not use it all the time...and also in turn, it would increase computer literacy...

I'm also sure geeks/gamers would love this oppurtunity, since its a way to get a powerhouse computer(/computers?) free (or at least relatively cheap)

    and that's only the beginning....

I'd like to see how this turns out, and how it gets used/abused...

    2) if it is relatively possible and AT&T does intend on following through, the market/government will decide what goes...
and i'd be VERY willing to bet that
    a) general society won't be too pleased (ie: have to pay AOL everytime they buy something)
    b) if general society doesn't like it, politicians won't support it
    c) if general society doesn't like it, other ISPs won't support it

in turn, due to higher education, this would lower unemployment, raise the economy, and we could probably even be able to lower taxes for everybody, since the taxes from the corporations would remove the offset from the reduced taxes.

hmmm....why fon't we see a politician say that we will reduce taxes for the general public by taxing corporations (that aren't being taxed)?

I'm sure that would go well with the public...(although they'd need to come up with their fundraising money some other way, since the corps sure as hell won't help any)

  25. if the riaa really was embacing new technology... on RIAA CEO Speaks · · Score: 3

yet. As they have for decades, new technologies and business models will continue to transform how music is distributed, and the recording industry -- whose business is finding new ways to make music available to more people -- will continue to embrace them.

If the RIAA really was embracing new technology, they would not have attacked Napster and MP3.com, to name a few....They would've realized that Napster and MP3.com, having gone mainstream, have a huge share of the mp3 market...the RIAA would have developed a partnership with either system so that either lower-quality mp3s ofartists are available to listen (in order to hear their sound before purchasing the cd, as an mp3 at 64k is good enough to hear, but not worthy to burn and make a cd) and/or allow high-quality mp3s to be bought and downloaded...

THAT would be embracing new technology and "finding new ways to make music available to more people" nad still allow to artist to make money....

However, THAT would also mean that the RIAA (and it's members) would have to share much of the profits with the partner...it's easier to sue, force the company out of business, and then eventually use the same business model to get ALL of the profits, and call that "embracng new technology"...
