  1. Re:Rambus vows to appeal... on Rambus Loses; Vows to Appeal · · Score: 1

I went to elementary school in the south and learned all about the "quarrels". I even believed in it at one time. But the truth of the matter is, The Civl War was all about slavery. If nothing else, why do you think the people in the North was so willing to fight? All that revisionist history they teach in the south is due to people not wanting to believe that they were in the wrong. Yes the south was in the wrong, the people in the southern states kept slaves. Admit it, live with it and get over it. Quit fighting the Civil War over and over again. It's not going to change the facts.

Although I own a number of FASA products, I have never been a big fan of FASA. I play them primarily because other people play them. I have yet to see a FASA product that was truly well thought out with balanced game play. Although big robots are fascinating, they (FASA) weren't the first to come out with the idea. Others before them have done a better job in creating a universe populated with robots and their pilots. In fact, most of the older mech designs were mostly taken from Robotech. Much of the rest were pieces of robots taken from various anime that they put together and called their own. And to add insult to injury, they created a universe where the nations of various non-European cultures such as, the Japanese, the Chinese and the Arabs were the bad guys while the white guys of various origins were the good guys. How prejudiced is that? I can only wonder what the makers of Robotech must have felt when they learned of this game called Battletech.

If not, I'd recommend a strategy game like KOEI's Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Definitely a steep learning curve for one who has never played one of KOEI's historic simulations.

Yahoo appears simply be another altavista since the use altavista. While there are search engines out there that list a larger portion of the web in their database. That only seems to add clutter and when you are searching for a certain item, all the extra stuff just bogs you down. In my honest opinion. Altavista is still the best.

  7. Hollywood on Review: "The Sixth Day" · · Score: 1

Hollywood isn't the only place the issue is taken up. There are individuals and organizations that are working to prevent the abuse of genetic engineering. I went to a school that was strong in Agriculture and Science years ago and I remember when a speaker came to visit to discuss the issues around BGH (Bovine Growth Hormone). I also remember the numerous people who attended wearing Monsanto hats (Monsanto being a major company that sells BGH). The issues concerning BGH is actually pretty clear cut unlike many other issues concerning biotech. BGH=bad. I'd be happy to argue the point with anyone who feels different.

Getting back to my story: If I remember correctly, the speaker was a lawyer who subsisted and worked off of a very limited budget. I was amazed at the forces that was arrayed against him. His was truely a David vs Goliath battle. The point I am trying to make is that the people who tries to raise issues concerning biotech are often seen as crackpots by the scientific community. Meanwhile, the general public has little awareness of the issues and court battles because the volunteer groups fighting to prevent abuse do not have the funding for TV commercials.

Another thing I would like to point out (which may be a bit off topic) is that there is a significant difference between Scientists and Engineers or CS majors although a lot of people seem to think otherwise. It is somewhat annoying when people discuss science as if they know all about it, when in fact, they don't have any idea.

  8. How is this not news? on NHK Plans 50-Year Digital Archive · · Score: 1

NHK I believe is the largest Japanese Television company (comparable to FOX? CBS?) and has an enormous impact on Japanese society (and with the increasing popularity of Japanese animation and film here in the US, need I say more?). We already have a good idea about just how important Japan is to us and the rest of the world. NHK has now embarked upon an ambitious project that will most likely be of great benefit to the world. How is this not important news? Do you mean to tell me that if it isn't happening in America, it isn't important? So if it isn't about Microsoft, Intel, or O.J. Simpson, it isn't news? Most of the media in the US is already so ratings driven that we hardly get any real news to speak of from major new sources such as TV and newspapers. In giving us news we would never have heard of from other sources, news that come from outside the small world we live in. Slashdot is doing us a service. Particularly when they are telling us of a possible future news source (NHK archive). I find it incredible that people complain about the relevance of this article.

  9. Re:That's BS on Real Review of DDR Mobo · · Score: 1

Well as I see it, the chipsets VIA has produced so far seems to be relatively problem prone (with the exception of the KT133 which is only slow). The KX133 which supports PC133 SDRAM had trouble running some power hungry GeForce cards stably. They also don't seem to be able to run Thunderbirds/Durons stably (with the possible exception of the Asus and Abit boards). The Irongate will run Thunderbirds on the get go. Also the Irongate boards perform on par using PC100 RAM vs a VIA board using PC133 RAM. You'd almost think that the Irongate was released after the KX133. And considering that VIA must have had engineering samples of Thunderbirds, Athlons and Durons before they released their much delayed KX133 and considering that they had a lot of help from AMD, I don't see them making a chipset superior to AMD's 760 anytime soon. From what I hear, VIA is delaying the release of the their DDR SDRAM supporting chipset. In the past, AMD has publicly announced that they do not plan to produce their own chipsets as a mainstream product. And they have tried to keep their word. Thus many motherboard makers did not even make an Irongate board. I would guess that the only reason their chipsets are somewhat lacking in features is because they plan to produce chipsets only as a temporary measure so that sales of their cpus will not be as badly effected by the lack of chipsets (in this case the lack of DDR SDRAM supporting chipsets). If VIA had its act together and actually produced a working chipset on time, I don't think either the 750 or the 760 chipsets would have been released.

Lets not confuse liberals with communists, environmentalists with nazis or whoever you want to associate with whoever. It is pointless trolling designed to aggravate. If a nazi chose to be a vegetarian, does that mean that all vegetarians are nazis? And by "Tree hugging liberal enviro-nazis" do you mean to say that there are no environmentalists among non-liberals? I wonder at the state of their intoxication when the moderators gave this blatant troll a rating of 3.

In anycase, lets talk about environmentalists. Which environmentalist are you talking about? Or perhaps you have a particular group in mind? If you live in California, some environmental group is probably protecting your drinking water as we speak and even that protection is limited as all those bottled water companies well know.

The deal with Californians/Americans is that they want to maintain their extravagant, unsustainable lifestyles even as they talk about protecting the environment. You can't eat the pie and have the pie too. I don't know how many times I've seen SUVs and the only person in it is the driver. And as often as not, it is a woman who is driving it. Big dick/vagina syndrome? Do you not know that CO2 levels have been rising since the industrial revolution? Ever heard of CO2 poisoning? Produce more CO2 so we can have more power? You want you children to buy air just so they could breath? No? Perhaps instead of buying that Suburban for your daily use a more efficient car will do? And these same people complain about the price of gasoline?

How often do you really need to haul or tow anything with your car? Is it really that difficult to rent a truck when you need it? And I know people who are studying to be environmentalists who drive those monsters when they obviously do not have the need. Some have told me how good it feels to drive a large high bodied car. But I think if they took some time to think about it, they'll realize that clean air and water is worth giving up being king of the road. And this is only one of many ways, people squander our natural resources. And the very fact people still think the environment is doing ok, when such essential (as opposed to 5.0 litre mustang or that Ghz computer) resources as air and water is threaten amaze me to no end.

You call creating new industrial areas at the rim of the city a solution? Urban sprawling is the very thing we must avoid. Its the worst thing you can do, reducing the already meager amount of viable natural habitat there is. We've already taken most of the prime habitat. What's left is mostly non-optimal for much of the wildlife. Not only that but we would be decimating the very land we are depending on to reduce our impact. ow much less CO2 would be recycled?

Fish and frogs may seem insignificant to those who do not study these animals. How valid is your judgement when you know zilch about them? I would recommend that you read up a bit. Here is a good start:
    http://www.whitehouse.gov/WH/EOP/OSTP/Environmen t/ html/teamingcover.html

"In the mean time, suffer, you wanted to play in the sun and beach while we stockpiled acorns for winter."

You mean to tell me that you guys don't import fossil fuels? You mean to tell me that you guys are actually self sufficient? Please! Spare me the BS.

You know what this environmentalist think? I think we should more conservative with our use of natural resources. No more street lights every 100ft no more 100 watt night lights. If we're careful we should be able to reduce our energy expenditure so that we don't won't really need new powerplants and our electric bills won't be too expensive even though we pay extra for imported electricity. And if we really need more power, I say we go with nuclear power plants. Something the designer of simcity never understood is how damaging a hydro electric plant is to the environment.
