  1. Catch-22 on Do Manufacturers Adequately Support Their Products? · · Score: 1

For years the computer industry has been a highly competitive one, where price is king. This often requires a company to use equipment they would not ordinarily use so that they can compete. This also means that this "substandard" equipment will fail and there will be no money for the company to make good on repairs. We, as consumers, are to blame for this, we have forgotten the old adage, "You get what you pay for". I for one would like to see this state of affairs change, but until we are willing to pay for quality and support, we have nothing more with which to look forward.

  2. Re:This has to go in Yahoo's favor on U.S. Judge To Hear Yahoo! Web-Blocking Case · · Score: 1

IANAL, but it seems to me that even if Yahoo wins in the US, they still lose in France. Since they have a presence in France, that presence is subject to French law. The French courts could simply levy the fines against Yahoo France for the perceived violations of Yahoo US until all the assets of Yahoo France are gone. I suspect that the revenues of Yahoo France are great enough that Yahoo US wants to keep it open, otherwise they would close up shop and leave.

  3. Re:Technically No, but.... on Can the BSA Investigate Your office for Piracy? · · Score: 2

If the BSA has grounds, they will obtain a search warrant and will be accompanied to your premises by US Marshalls. This happened to a company I worked for about 14 years ago. A disgruntled employee notified the BSA that we were not in compliance with software licensing. They sent the obligatory letter, which we ignored, then they showed up with the Marshalls. We were effectively shut down for 4 days while they conducted their search.

  4. Re:Shared risk pool on UK Allows Insurers To Use Genetic Test Results · · Score: 1

You are right about the 'shared risk pool', but to make this work, they need to know all the risks so the appropriate premiums can be set. I do agree with higher premiums for those who knowingly take higher risks, such as smokers, but I am not sure that we should have higher premiums for those whose choice is made for them by genetics.

  5. Re:slow news day, huh? on Microsoft and Cisco Don't Pay Taxes? · · Score: 2

If you stop to think about it, even companies that send money to uncle sam for taxes, don't pay taxes. They alter the price of their goods to cover the tax and pass it on to their customers. Ultimately it is the individual who pays all taxes, the government has become very adept at hiding this truth from the masses.

  6. Before you trash Yahoo... on Apple Sues Employee Over Cube Leaks · · Score: 1

Mac Central is reporting that Yahoo released the info after a subpoena was issued. You can still say they 'rolled over', but it is not their duty to defend anyone, and it is their duty to comply with court orders. They have also reported the employees name.
