Ashcroft cowrote and sponsored the repugnant, free speech chilling Metamphetimine anti-proliferation act which would have made talking about illegal drugs illegal. In addition to that THIS info has just surfaced. Basically Ashcroft told law enforcement officials he would look the otherway in asset forfeiture cases. This guy is a danger to ALL AMERICANS who are not Christian fundamentalists'. If you value freedom of speech this man must be stopped.
As for your generalization concerning the looting. Can you imagine 50,000 pissed off linux users protesting copy protection on Har drives on the streets of Seattle? Can you imagine an army of cops in battle gear who think that you are the epitomy of evil? Can you imagine 20 to 30 people out of the 50,000 misbehaving? That's what happened in Seattle. The media mischaracerized practically everything about the protests in Seattle in order to make the WTO look good.
The thoughts and opinions protesting in the streeets where effectively marginalized by the focus on the few incidents of property damage.
What if the seeds your family has grown for centuriesm were being patented by Monsanto and Backed by the WTO?
The word globalization is a misnomer. AS if the world was not already "globalized". This is part of the clever rhetoric employed by the WTO. I must add that this group and the other protestors are not anti trade per say but against trade deciions being made by a small group of men that aren't elected, behind closed doors.
"Unions are too corruptable and do more harm to employers and employees alike, they hamper creativity and initiative, thus they are incomaptible with IT workers."
Depends on your concept of a union. Unions take on as many forms as corporations, guilds or any social construct for that matter. Check out the IWW. Take a look into their history as well. Their concepts are very compatible with Bakunin.
Actually this is already taking place in California. Customers in California can get their power from a company called
Green Mountain which generates all of it's power from solar energy.
The reason that they are having problems in San Diegomis that SAn Diego is the first city to have a completely dregulated market. Their bills went up 300%. In Northern california and the Central coast the the market has notr been fully deregulated. When it is your 20.00 dollar bill will become 60.00 dollars. This has the potential of wrecking California's economy.
If we did not have the electoral college this mess would be over with already. The popular vote would have put a new president in office.
The current system is like watching a football game in which a team wins by ten points and then being told that the team that actually won did not really win.
I am very unhappy with this system personally and I invite all who feel the same way to participate in protest.
You are correct in that we are a Republic. The problem is that most of us are taught that it is a Democracy. Imagine all of the people who fell a sleep in civics class waking up and realizing that they have been lied to about democracy. If only those that had power would be truthful that would solve a lot of our problems. Most importantly though I refuse to support a person who murders adults underneath the mask of the state. Both of the major candidates support the death penalty and both of them know that there are grave flaws in our current system.
That's why we need none of the above on the ballot.
In many countries if the majority votes none of the above the elections are scrapped and thirty days later there is a new election with new candidates. This is an idea that is being promoted by Ralph NAder in his campaign.
"If a CEO is making $50mil a year, that means he did something right"
Why the presumption that he did something right? Just because he kmakes 50 mil? Lots of people make billions of dollars doing leess than savory activities.
FUD fromthe democrats jsut like Microsoft FUD towards Linux. Why be manipulated, vote for who you believe will represent you not what someone else tells you will happen if you vote a certain way.
A vote for Nader or Browne is a vote for more freedom and options.
This is a fear tactic. No president knows how the Justices they pick will vote on cases. Some of Reagan's appointees have been have favored supporting Roe v. Wade. This is just another ploy by the 2 major parties to prevent 3rd party dissenting votes.
I don't think his article was saying Corporations don't use computers, but rather many large corporations do not want individuals having power over their computers . i.e.. MPAA, RIAA. THis could be construed as neo-ludditism.
If you as an individual ca n afford lawyers to protect yourself from corporations that have lawyers on retainer and an endless stream of cash.
Extending the length of copyrights basically extends the life of monopolies.
Yes my point exactly. Just because the RIAA and the MPAA give money to get their way does not mean that artists and technical people cannot use their money to pursuade politicians.
I think what really needs to be examined is the influence money has on our lawmakers.
Campaign finance reform is a very important issue
because, those with more money really do have more influence on our Government.
This means my taxes and my vote have very little influence on lawmakers.
Simply stated I am paying taxes, and voting yet I am not being represented.
If I remember correctly the founding fathers of the USofA said these words preceding the revolution.
"NO TAXION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION"
Maybe she has other intentions besides protecting IP. The system can work both ways, she could be donating the money to ensure that the crap that occured in the 80's with Tipper will not happen again. The intention of the donors cannot be surmised without questioning the donors themselves. BTW artists had a difficult battle with the RIAA earlier this year concerning sound recordings being reclassified by federal law as works for hire. So it may be prudent for artists to donate money to politicians so that they are not shut out of the process.
Actually it is not to late. Call and write your Senator. Let your friends know and spread the word.

It takes a small fortune to patent anything on a wroldwide scale. If a large corporation wants to steal your inventions they cn and will.
