But the whole point of that marriage is that it's a political move on Paul's part to seal him to the emporer. There is no love there, the love is with Chani.

  2. Some characters could have been better on On The Dune Miniseries · · Score: 1

I really liked the first installment and thing so far they have been very true to the story (and even to David Lynch's movie which I love) But I'm a little disappointed by some of the character representations. I have no complaints with any of the actors (I prefer Jürgen Prochnow as Leto but William Hurt is doing a very fine job), but my big complaint is with the Baron. Baron Harkonnen Vladimir is supposed to be a grossly fat and disusting man. "... grossly and immensely fat. And with subtle bulges beneath folds of his dark robes to reveal that all this fat was sustained partly by portable suspensors harnessed to his flesh. ... but his feet would carry no more than fify of them [standard kilos]." I thought David Lynch did an awesome job with the Baron in the 1984 film version of dune. He was discusting and coupled with his character a great villian. I thought the scfi version was watered down and not an adequate representation. This Baron doesn't seem as evil and cunning as the book or the other film.

I was also a little disappointed that they cut the scene out where Jessica and Paul have been captured and are being carried to the desert and Paul uses the weirding way to free him and Jessica.

So far though I've been very impressed. They are doing a wonderful job with the story and most of the visuals are awesome. The sand worm was extremely impressive, I can't wait for the final battle when they ride the big ones in. But some of the desert scenes have had a real bad look to them. There was one scene that looked like Paul and Jessica were inside a building when they were in the desert.

But I'll keep watching and probably get it on DVD when/if it comes out.

In my area (Raleigh, NC), the Oddessy Network shows the original muppet show every night around 6 or 7 pm. That's Time Warner Basic cable that I see it through but I'm pretty sure the Oddessy is a national channel.

  5. Direct TV is the way to go. on Ask Slashdot: The Dish · · Score: 1

Direct TV is the way to go IMHO. (http://www.directtv.com) They provide all your pay-per-view and regular (cable) station access so that's like 80 channels plus the digital music channels (~30). They also offer stars/Encore networks. If you want HBO/SHOWTIME/CINIMAX you have go additionally get USSB http://www.ussb.com (all they offer is the movie networks) but it's like $10 for 5 HBO's. As for local channels, that's the only problem. If you can prove that there is no way you can receive local programming via conventional antenna , either you live out in the boondocks or next to a sub station, you can't get networks via satellite. But if you can browbeat your local networks into giving you a waiver then you can get networks on Satellite. Otherwise you are stuck with an antenna. Direct TV sells a dual dish that does satellite and direct PC net access (claiming up to 400K). The dish is the cheapest part it's the receiver that's going to run you anywhere from $120 to $250 depending on the model. I like the sony AD-4, runs about 180 on the net sometimes cheaper. Does Dual LNB (2 sat feeds off the same dish) RF remote and Dolby Digital (Lucas eat your heart out) Direct TV service runs anywhere from $20 /month to 60/month then if you buy the mega sports packages (like the entire MLB season) be prepared to pay like $140 just for that. I've been a Direct TV customer for about a year now and I'm extremely happy. I don't even miss my networks, much. One thing to look into is see if you local cable company offers a very basic package for like $10/month. Most do but they don't advertise it as a basic package. Here (Alabama) it's called lifetime package it's like 5 channels (networks, pbs, weather channel) and it runs for about $12 a month. Feel free to send me questions.

  7. Colbalts already got them beat. on Wintel "Thin" Servers to Compete with Linux · · Score: 1

Cobalt Networks has exactly what they are talking about. Easy to use, setup, configure, file server, print servers, with a web interface. I evaluated a cobalt raq that retailed for $1500 and it took me literally 10 minutes to get it up on the network using DHCP and half of that was me pulling out of all the packing material. The webserver took another 2 minutes to configure then add content. Comes configured with samba and printers are a breeze.

We (my company) has a $20,000 full care support contract with SGI for 2 of our servers (before the linux junkies at the office got a hold of the P.O. process ;) ) and I can get faster support from emailing a mailing list or IRC than I can by calling SGI. 10. The Spawn of the Devil on DVD panel accepts Divx · · Score: 1

I am thinking that somewhere down the line someone might find that Microsoft is behind Divx, it's right down thier alley. Don't be fooled though Divx is the tool of the devil. The sad thing is that the dual players are lower quality than most of the just DVD or just Divx players. I have heard some inside rumors that one of the big movie houses that is still holding out is going with DVD and NOT divx -- Disney Home Video has plans to re-release their animated movies on DVD (supposedly) several of the non-animated ones are already out.
