Ok. My japanese is a bit rusty, but as far as weight, it looks like it's a slim 7.5 pounds, or 3.75kg. However, it's a nasty 3,400 dollars. As cool as it is to have a water-cooled laptop, I think I'd prefer to get one of those mini-vaios for only 1,200.

    * Only 1000 dollars per kg! what a savings! *

If this is a legitmate buisness model then the TV networks have nothing to worry about. They can give the shows away for free, and charge people to watch the commercials! ;)

Internet's pretty cheap in Japan, actually. I think it was comparible to here in the US for Cable modem (40 bucks a month).

Besides the cost of actually installing the line in the first place, the phone pay rate is pretty similar to NYC. 10c per call locally, and a small fixed rate for sub locally, then standard long distance.

60 Hours a week? In the US?

The work week in Japan is only around 45 hours, + around 2 hours for drinking or "after work" activities. Granted, each job is different, but still.

But as far as your comment about "the father (or mother) can actually watch the child and maybe offer a helping hand," I'm glad that you're always able to be around 24/7 to help the children learn and grow, but sometimes people NEED to go to work to pay the bills, no matter how much they want to stay with their children. And, important events don't generally wait till the end of the work day, in Japan OR in America.

  7. Data Gardian on Making Users Back Up Important Data? · · Score: 1

Personally, I'd set up a central server that deals with all their stuff. Then you can back it up yourself, and not have to rely on them to do the right thing. Tell them that their hard drives will be wiped ever X days, even if you don't plan on actaully wiping them.

    [Plug = True]

Also there are companies that consult, or offer redundancies or whatever. If you're in the NY tri-state area I know that one such company is Fluid Reality I don't know how much info is on their site, but I've heard alot of stuff about their Data Guardian data services.

All of my friends have at some point worked for stream. However the only two to actually enjoy it/stay over 3 months were a sadist who enjoyed tormenting the people on the phone, and was the master of the hold button.

("Yes [hold] you f*cking moron [/hold] your network does seem to be down. However, [hold] if you didn't have it shoved so far up your a$$ [/hold] I should be able to fix it.)

The other one was a complete moron, and just read of the script. I seem to remember one of the managers thinking that she was the best employee they had.

  9. Re:Um on Gamespot Goes to Subscription Model · · Score: 1

The question really is: "Is it worth saving 5 dollars a month (2 for a year long subscription) to spend extra time searching the net for all the stuff I can find in one place?"

Things are always going to be available for free on the net. It's just a matter of how convenient it is to find them. sure, I could find all the Gamespot complete movies SOMEWHERE on the net, but each site's going to have one or maybe two of them. Then I have to search for another site that might have different ones, only to find that they're in some crazy video format, or that they're just the same ones as before. Same with codes, reviews, etc.

I spent about 20 minutes yesterday trying to find codes for a game that weren't copied off of some other guy's site, and thus either wrong (through multiple copying) or just really uninformitive. If I did that about once a week, that's 100 minutes of mine time spent looking for good content in a sea of crap. For two dollars everything is where I need it.

You're right. People hate paying for content. Content on the net is generally free, and people are used to that. But I think that people *will* pay for convenience. Lord knows I would.

Then the announcer comes on "People like this vote... Shouldn't you?"

Hmmm... smart (although lacking hygine) people's vote should be canceled out by the majority!
