  1. Checkout the UK ADSL Guide on British Broadband (Finally) Jumps · · Score: 3, Informative

Best place to check out what is happening in the UK for ADSL and to talk about the different providers is at www.adslguide.org.uk

  2. Would someone tell Google to stop using this? on Geographical Borders on the Web · · Score: 1

Right now, I'm in London using a UK ISP but if I go to www.google.com, it has a redirector that thinks that I am in Germany and so it force redirects me to www.google.de.

They admit they have problems with their redirection based on IP but you know what their answer is? Turn on cookies and set my preferences to English!

Wouldn't it make more sense to remove the force redirects instead of showing a German web page to people from 212.137.x.x who probably don't speak German?

  3. Re:BT is a big crap monopoly on Top UK Cable Firms Scrapping DSL · · Score: 1

Oftel is a lame duck as Ofcom will now replace it.

It appears that the solution to a flat tire is simply to rotate the tires and see if that works better rather than fix the tire. (Dilbert?)

  4. SFNB on OS-Independent Web Banking? · · Score: 2

I was with Security First since the early days and its still IMHO one of the best Internet banks out there in terms of functionality and costs. I know its now owned by the Royal Bank of Canada so Canadians can use it too.

I'm now with CitiBank in the UK... very basic capabilities but it works (mostly). First-E (www.first-e.com) looks geek friendly (Java, PHP, etc.) but the security paranoia and the non-standard debit card aren't worth it.

  5. Re:37% of browsers use HTTP/1.1, the rest use 1.0 on ARIN: No More IP's For IP-Based Virtual Hosts · · Score: 1

Sorry, not even close. IE when used via a proxy will default to using HTTP 1.0 but still sends a Host header and older versions of Netscape (um, maybe even new versions since last time I looked Netscape is still using HTTP 1.0) also send Host: headers. Not sure how far back that goes tho.

  6. Re:Lynx (try w3m instead) on redhat.com Redone · · Score: 2

Although it may look bad in Lynx. w3m is able to render it fairly well. The left column scrolls down a long way compared to the rest but its certainly usable.

I'm amazed at how many table/framed sites w3m is able to render as a text mode browser.

    Two VERY important items.

ONE - Install the drivers that come with VMWARE (svga)
TWO - Run an X server with the extensions

If you don't do the above don't expect to see the speed improvements.

My Celeron 300A w/96MB of ram is working at great speed.
