  1. My own experiences on Computer Science vs. Computer Engineering? · · Score: 1

I am a senior this year at the Oregon Institute of Technology. I'm getting a B.S. in computer hardware and a. A.A in computer software (yes, software is an art here).

The difference I see is that the hardware side deals with programmable hardware. You write the code that controls an extremely fast dedicated piece of hardware that is special purpose.

In software you're dealing with general-purpose computers, operating systems, etc.

So, if you want to work with OS's then go software, if you want to work with closed, custom chips then go hardware. If you want to deal with capacitors and that sort go electronics engineer.

  2. slash and dot on Bad Call For Referee Dispute · · Score: 1

On these grounds, slashdot might have grounds to sue everyone on the net using a slash (/) or a dot (.) in their domain name. Thus, slashdot ownz the entire internet!

Maybe we need to send these judges to skool to educate them about the far-reaching consequences of some of these half-thought out decisions.

  3. Someone should patent on Despair Suing 7,000,000 Email Users Over :-( · · Score: 1

While they're patenting colons, dashs, and open parenthesis someone should create a company called TD and make their (trademarked) logo

Then they could sue any web site that uses tables!

    Or void main(void) :)

  4. Don't follow the book plots. on More On 'Ender' Film From Orson Scott Card · · Score: 1

We all remember how much Battlefield Earth sucked, even though the book was great. They tried to pack a 1000+ page book into a short movie and it just cannot be done. I'm afraid that Enders Game may follow the same route. What I'd like to see is the equivalent of another book done in movie form. A completely unique plot but using the same characters and setting. Call it a companion movie just like Ender's Shadow is :)

There's nothing worse than seeing a movie butcher your favorite books...

  5. Military Bipedals on Sony Releases Walking Humanoid Robot · · Score: 1

Clearly the Japanese are ahead (at least publicly) on walking robots, so that begs the question: do they have robot weapons? stick an M-16/203 on one of those and we have the first robot warrior... Somehow I don't think the military wants to use Asimov's three laws of robotics on a combat robot...
