  1. Re:Statistics... on Does Redskins Loss Presage A Kerry Win? · · Score: 2, Insightful

This curious "streak" has been reported for a week or so, long before anyone knew what the outcome would be. To say that Kerry supporters are grasping at straws is silly, this is merely reporting the result of a story brought up a week ago, no party is seriously trying to spin this, everyone realizes this is just a funny coincidence.

Also, just to clarify since you didn't seem to understand the story, it involves the incumbent's party not the incumbent himself, so if some correlation did exist (it doesn't), it would apply in every election, not just one where someone was running for reelection.

  3. Re:Is anyone else fed up? on Star Trek TOS DVD Box Sets Forthcoming · · Score: 1

This is hardly crooked business. When they started releasing TOS on DVD originally, the TV-on-DVD genre was still in it's infancy and nobody knew how popular the "season set" style was going to be. Paramount went with the standard VHS style which was to throw a couple episodes on a disc. *Many* people have written to them to say they weren't going to buy the series until it was available in season sets, so this is really just Paramount realizing they made a mistake with their initial release strategy and correcting it.

I'm one of those who would rather see Paramount get it right by releasing season sets rather than make everyone else suffer for fear of offending those who bought the initial release.

I'm confused by your comment. First you stated:

Why blacklist Media3 at the IP level?...It's not because they have people selling spam-tools, believe it or not. Nowhere in the mail-abuse guidelines does it talk about blacklisting people for selling spamming tools. Personally I detest spamming tools and the people that sell them, but I'm aware that one can't easily pick and choose about blocking sites on this basis. That is a form of censorship, and I think censoring the Internet is futile, even if it would serve my particular desires.

Then you go on to say:

Under these circumstances, the only real way to hurt the spammer is to target their web page. It's getting close to borderline, but I believe that the RBL is still quite justified in their actions here.

So is blocking their IP acceptable or not acceptable to you? It's censorship and futile, but the RBL is justified in doing it?

I won't even go into your flawed reasoning regarding freedom of speech, as others already appear to have covered that.

  8. Re:Lowering the standards once again. on College Board AP CompSci Exam Will Be In Java · · Score: 1

I took the AB test and I had no knowledge of classes or really anything to do with OO programming when I got to the test. My first course in college was taught in Java and that was where I got my first real introduction to classes.

My case study was also BigInt (1999 test), but knowledge of classes was hardly necessary for the test. I hadn't even *looked* at any of the material on BigInt until 15 minutes before the test, and I can assure you I was freaking out when I saw how long the packet was. However, the test pandered to the uninformed, such as myself, and only asked 2 or 3 multiple choice questions on the case study (both very intuitive). The free response questions were even more pathetic. They asked us to add two functions to the class, but neither of them required knowledge of any other element of the class, and they practically layed out in pseudo-code how our functions should work. I got a 4 on that test despite having very limited coding experience and a class which was less than useless (I took the course as independent study at the same time my teacher had a BASIC class filled with uninterested freshman).

The rest of the test just involved generic programming concepts like recursion and how to manipulate stacks and queues, but nothing involving actually implementing our own data structures. I self-taught myself all of that stuff (not like it was that complicated, especially with the header files they provide). I haven't found a language yet that's as easy to teach OO concepts in, so hopefully the College Board will step up the difficulty of the AP test so teachers will actually take advantage of the ease of Java to teach some of these important topics.

Why do you think you don't have a reasonable option for high-speed access right now? If there was a large demand for it in your area, do you think the cable company would be sitting twiddling it's thumbs and not raking in the cash from you?

The reason you don't have high speed access yet is that the demand isn't there yet. Wireless isn't exactly cheap to set up either, so it's not reasonable to expect wireless companies to set up service in your area. They're struggling to stay in business as it is, supplying their service in an area with low demand isn't going to help the situation any.
