  1. Why choose Woody? on Debian 2.2 (potato) Freezes · · Score: 1

[1] Debian releases are code-named after characters from the movie Toy Story. Woody is the main character, the cowboy action figure.

However, after seeing Toy Story 2 wouldn't it make more sense to name the next release after Wheezy the penguin?

  2. chmod 775 - QUICK! on Humpday Quickies · · Score: 3

CGIwrap Error: Script is not executable. Issue chmod 755 /www/home/recordstore.com/cgi-bin/wuname/wuname.pl

Pretty cool huh. I bet your jelous that yours is just 'Grand Moff Puppeteer'!

  4. This raises an interesting question. on Red Caps Adopt Red Hat · · Score: 2

As mentioned in this Slashdot article the US Government is seriously looking into using Linux - specifically Red Hat 6.x. How will this fare with (potentially) billions of Communist developers contibuting to their OS? While it's good to get more folks on the wagon, what will happen here? Will the Red Scare strike fear into the hearts of the US government? Will they be forced to use the closed-source commie offerings of M$?

  6. Cool! on UO Scientists Get Funding for Quantum Logic Gates · · Score: 1

Raymer notes that while the development of the quantum computer is still perhaps 20 years in the future, if one were ever built, it would be used "for certain special tasks and might operate thousands to millions of times faster than the largest parallel processor computer" available today.

Can you imagine how fast a kernel would compile on this!?!

  7. You have been warned. on The Upcoming LinuxOne IPO · · Score: 1

Although it seems that any Linux company will make a killing with their IPO (Look at VA Linux), I'm a little concerned with placing my money with this company. It appears even they have no faith in their product, they have RedHat 6.0 running on their webserver! They have all sorts of hokey features that come bundled with their disto, one of which is called LinuxMac(TM) - software that makes reading and writing Macintosh format files viable, whether on disk or CD. Easy to install and use, this industry-leading software should be invaluable to Apple computer users that need to access their files on a Linux system. Jeez, last time I check I was able to do this with ANY disto!

  8. Kiss the freedom of speech goodbye! on Online Journal Publisher Raided by Police · · Score: 2

I guess this is the beginning of the end. It's a sad day when you can't even mention a word that a certain company may deem innapropriate. The following is taken from the article:

Transasia is claiming over a million dollars in damages based on their claim that a search engine request using the word "Leonardo" brings up not only their web sites but also those of the Leonardo arts organization.

The suit asks that the Association Leonardo be forbidden from using the word "Leonardo" in its web site projects or any other products or services.

Does anyone else feel threatened by this? If I should put slanderous remarks on my webpage about the shoddiness of M$ products should I expect the men in blue to knock on my door? I understand that there are certain things you can't say (such as yelling 'FIRE' in a crowded movie theatre), but isn't this going a little bit too far?!

  11. Wow, another vacuum! [sic] on Cool Personal Robots · · Score: 1

This is incredibly cool - however, does this little guy do ANYTHING but roll around and vacuum? From what I understand this is what it does: It takes a little tuning to get it just right, but it's worth the extra work when you have visitors, and Cye comes in and impresses the hell out of them! It's important to note that Cye himself is wider than the vacuum attachment, so he'll never be able to clean right to the edges- you'll have to go around behind him and do those yourself. Also the name is too cloyingly sweet for me. Seriously, c'mon it's name is 'CYE' - As in cyborg? Cheezy like the color.

  12. Mystery Meat! on Suing the Spammers · · Score: 1

We all know that SPAM really sucks, but what are you going to do? Sure you could take the time to trace the message all the way back to its point of origin, but do you really WANT to do that with all of 'em? Lets face it, SPAM wastes everybody's time. The sender needs to compose the message, the reciever needs to sift through dozens of unwated solicitations, hell - it even chews up CPU time to send off 10,000 messages at once. What I don't understand is why AOL recieved anything. Sure the messages use up some disk space - Big Deal! Hard drives are so cheap nowadays. It's not even like AOL even needed to wade through it! The money should be filtered down to the people who actually recieved the SPAM. It's nice to see that people are taking a stand against spammers, but let's face it - they're fighting a losing battle.

  13. How very Orwellian(?) on Australian Gov't Censors Censored · · Score: 1

The Australian government seems a little too much like Big Brother to me. I for one will not bow down and submit to anyone who wants to force-feed me what they want to see. Their reply to Wired is funny: "Last time we didn't shut down the site, but just altered the page," she said. "This time we shut the site down for security reasons." Their site was cracked twice before they even got the picture? How many times will it take before they realize that people don't want or need babysitters?

  14. Perhaps we're all forgetting something? on The Genome Project and the Dark Side · · Score: 1

I don't know about the rest of you, but honestly this really frightens me. With the advent of the 'Perfect Baby' everyone will be running around carrying a miniature Leonardo DiCaprio or a tiny Cameron Diaz. And with that, they'll all be exactly identical, no more individuals - sorry. Maybe I'm wrong here (more than likely), but doesn't creativity occur when individuals decide to think out of the box? If we were all happy with our state of mediocrity would we even have Linux? Perhaps Torvalds would've never written anything and just gone on with his lovely life where everyone's beautiful.

  15. It's just one of those necessary evils. on Novell CEO Attacked by Cookie Monster · · Score: 2

Sure, you could rant and rave about how bad cookies suck - but what would you do without shopping carts, user preferences, and *GASP* slashboxes? Of course I suppose you could petition all programmers to use Php4's session functions and not only get nowhere fast, but get rid of cookies all together.

  16. Supreme court ruling anyone? on No EToy for Christmas · · Score: 3

It's very sad to live in a day when having a domain name that's similar to another company's can get your site pulled under threat of heavy fines. What's particularly aggrivating is the fact that they were around long before eToys was (especially if we look at internet time). Looks like I'd better hurry and register slashdoot.org.

  17. (Gov't == M$) on WTO Puts Internet Taxes on Hold · · Score: 1

The idea of internet taxation is ridiculous! Perhaps we are safe now, but what about 18-24 months down the road the politicians start lobbying again? The government is pulling a total Microsoft here. If they don't own it, they'll either A) Buy it. B) Destroy it. or C) Ignore it completely and engineer all of they're products to work against it.
