Even if the kid is brilliant, explain why he failed the state math test. Anyone who is capable of understanding nuclear physics, much less actually building a breeder reactor, is pretty advanced in math, pretty far past calculus. I'm pretty iffy about this one.
It may at first. From my understanding, one with overcorrected vision will at first experience migraines and the like due to an information overload from the optic nerve. However, after a week or two, the brain will develop new pathways that allow for this extra sensory input. I would guess that if 20/2.5 is actually achievable, it would make more sense to slowly adapt oneself to it, i.e., going down to 20/15, then 20/10, etc. The brain is an adaptible thing though, and I would guess that as long as it is given time to adjust, it should eventually be able to handle the extra sensory input.
I've never seen Silence of the Lambs, but after Hannibal, I'm definately going to. Hannibal as in independent story offers more insight into the mind of Hannibal Lecter than people give credit. Lecter isn't evil, he simply has a different set of morals. The people he kills offend his sensibilities, and thus, he kills them in the way best gauranteed to offend theirs, eating them.
As for Clarisse, I don't think she became a one dimensional pawn. If that were true, Hannibal wouldn't have lived through the film.
Hannibal was a great film. The cinematography was incredible, and the performances by Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore were stunning. If Hopkins doesn't win Best Actor in the Academy Awards next year, I will be stunned.
There's no way to compare high school to high school. That would require individual evaluation of every teacher in the country, and it's simply not happening. The SATs are the best way to get an idea of a student's ability to do easy math and english. That's why they're used. The best way to reform this would be to simply change the type of questions on the SATs each year.
Actually, you can't do math. 300gb/sq.in x 15.315 sq.in = 4594.5 gb. Which, when divided by eight, to go from bits to bytes, comes out to 574 gigabytes.
And the volume only matters in terms of layers. The cool thing about holograms is that it makes a flat surface appear to have 3 dimensions. The reason holographoic storage is so promising is that you can theoretically have data stored at every point on a disc at an infinite number of angles. Then, by changing the angle of the laser, you change the data coming out of a given point on the disc. So it's surface area that matters. Now, if you were going to do a multi layered disc, where each layer reflects a different frequency layer, you would sort of worry about volume, but even then, it would be a matter of counting layers, not really of calculating volume.
You people are making too many generalizations about high school students being stupid. You say we haven't read Shakespeare, but we were required to read Romeo and Juliet in 9th grade. And then Macbeth in 10th. You saw we don't know Euclid's Elements, and maybe I haven't read the book, but I took advanced geometry and did very well in it. I know some of Elements. Can I compose a coherent paragraph? Yes. While this one isn't well written, it's not meant to be, and it does make sense. Maybe your point about books being more important than computers is correct. In fact, I agree. But don't tell me how bad my educational system is. Because frankly, I've done very well in my public schools, and will continue to do so.
Had you read the article, you might've noticed that the X-Box is going to be open sourced, so that (ideally) anyone can write software to it.
If you're looking for a Linux based system, take a look at the Indrema. There was something about it on this sight a couple weeks ago.
My feeling is that the purpose of government is to protect the welfare and liberty of its people. Drugs are not a matter of "It's my life, I can do what I want." They are not dangerous only to those who use them, but also to the people around the user. They can destroy multiple lives. That's why they are illegal. By your reasoning, government restrictions on drunk driving are anti-freedom. But the reason the restrictions are there is that drunk driving impinges on the liberty of those people who you endanger by driving. Drugs are the same.
Unless the lecture my teachers gave me is incorrect, the Electoral college is based on the popular vote. The winner of the popular vote in every state gets all the electoral votes (except in Maine) As such, all the idiots still have influence.
I believe it's only in the case of an electoral tie where the congressmen will "vote their conscience (read: party).

That's way to corrupt a good blonde joke.
