  1. Loophole? on Censorware to be Mandatory in Schools, Libraries · · Score: 5
So, if the bill specifies obscenity, child pornography, and "harmful to minors", would it be possible to use, as a loophole, the fact that there simply isn't any software that can target specifically this material?

As in, "we're perfectly willing to obey the law, and just as soon as suitable software is released, we'll get right onto installing it."

Anybody else here remember using a tape recorder to upload/download software onto a PET, TRS-80, or an Apple II? And when you were loading a program, sometimes you weren't quite sure if the loading sequence had worked until it got to the end and you entered RUN.

We did! We had a TRS-80 with a tape recorder, and my dad hacked it so you could hear the program as it loaded. It sounded awful, of course, but there were slight variations in the static, which the asterisks in the corner of the screen would blink in unison with. This meant you could tell when the program wasn't loading right, because the asterisks would stop blinking even though you could tell they should be, by listening to the sound.

    WHY is this relevant??

Why are you dragging that FUD into this story?

I'm sorry, but I'm sick of seeing minority religions (even ones that are in high disfavor) used to tarnish people who we otherwise know nothing about.

And you have nothing to back up your statement! No link, nothing! How can you possibly expect anyone to take you seriously? (Except the anti-scientologists who want more FUD to back up their opinions....)

    (Okay, rant mode off now.)

Err, why is this listed under YRO?

I'll grant that privacy and encryption are common subjects here, but this is really just a Freshmeat announcement masquerading as a story.

Oh, like anyone listens to speeches. I never did.

The approach he took got his message out much more effectively. Would we be discussing this incident here on Slashdot if he had merely made a speech?
