Though after the amazement that is GTA3: San Andreas mabye there is hope.

Yes, drivers can do it, but as opposed to win98 you have to either have a microsoft signature to install a driver, or a warning will pop up saying that this driver isn't installed. So a regular app can't crash the system, but yes a driver can. Drivers sit under the layer of the GUI and can do pretty much whatever they want.

And why are apps able to touch hardware directly?
Only drivers can touch hardware directly, but potentially any app can install a driver but you will get a warning that it was not signed by microsoft.

And why can malicious ones crash the system?
Because drivers work in a layer under XP essentially directly ties to the kernel. Because if a program crashes generally systems sitting ontop of them will crash also.

Well obviously such a system has to be implemented over time. First new roads are made automatic only then overtime more roads are converted to automatic only making sure that atleast some path is available to manual drivers untill manual driving vechicles don't exist. Though I suspect rural neighborhoods will always be manual drive as cars won't nessesarly have maps of small roads, and people just like to be able to drive manually sometimes.

This is where a good distributed trust model would come in handy. If there really was bad congession many cars would know about it, not just one. Of course you then need some cert auth or web of trust so that you don't just pretend like you are several cars.

On the other hand messages like "STOP you are about to crash" have to be handled differently, obviously you don't want to slam on the brakes because someone could be lying and this could cause a real crash. But you don't want to just ignore it till you get confermation, so you would need a system that
    1. applies steady brake pressure but not enough to cause a crash itself
    2. warn driver to look for danger ahead
    3. Report abuse of system if person was lying.

You could opt out all you want and people could still report you based on your license plate. Either way, the holy grail for me is to be able to communicate with other drivers in a private communication simply be identifying which car I want to communicate with, which currently is very hard to do. This is much better than the current hand waving that is going on. Of course the second advantage is seeing around those large SUVs to know what cars are oncomming, of could this assumes 100% participation and becomes where a computer could drive itself.

If you take the visual system as we have it, and add networked information, any information that disagrees with what is seen can be ignored and any information of what is not seen it better than no information. Only becomes a problem is the falses are so common that people ignore the information. Infact you want false information on occasion though so people learn not to assume the machine is correct in the same way people assume they may have blind spots before changing lanes.

Yes, but say a game cost $50 dollars, wouldn't it be reasonable to offer a few free months. Some do this, but some don't give you any free months. The thought of spending $50 for a game to turn around and not be able to use it untill you've shucked out more money.
I guess I could understand this if there was a hardware component, like buying a cellphone to get service. But cellphone companies consider the phone a loss leader meaning they pay for some of it so you will sign up for the service. It would seem to make good marketing sense to give away the game to get people signed up for the service. This is something Anarchy Online has been doing for a while (before the free year offer they have been offering free download and free month for a long time). Personally I'm shocked it didn't work better for them, I guess the game had too many problems out the door. Either way, generally you often have to give something away to sell monthly services, the fact that MMORPGs havn't is personally surprising. But being a believer in capitalism, I can really only blame this on the consumers who allow themselves to be ripped off.
