Well, I have a feeling that most of the people where railroaded into voting. Also for a non technical person, this law, expecially with its special exclusions for content providers and what not, its easy for a quick gloss of this bill to appear as a positive thing for technology. Almost looks like it moves copywrite law into the new millinium! hehehehe

Just the comment on the snakes, and crocodiles thing. Snakes are pretty much on the far end of the reptilian group. I've heard theorys that they evolved (if evolution accually took place, which btw I'm still not sure about) from eels which evolved from fish. While the rest of the reptiles evolved from a seperate group of sea creatures entirly. Now given most likly dinosaurs evolved from reptiles (most likly) and into birds (currently the theory). Obviously birds are farher up the evolution chain than snakes. Though, I guess one would just have to figure out exactly how old snakes are, and how old crocs are, though we generally guess birds are around 50 to 100 million years old. But then again, I really don't believe hardly any of it, atleast not our current explination. OH AND BTW, for all you Darwin lovers out there, read a little more closly Darwin never said that man evolved from apes, he said that black people probably evolved from apes. And for me, a statement like that significantly lowers the quality of the guys argument (even if such a statement was socially acceptable at the time) (Find out for yourself, find darwins text on the web and searh in it for the n word).

    Interesting statistic.
How closly are you following the trial: Very closely 5%, somewhat closely 51%, not at all 44%.
So in other words we should really only be able to ask opinions about the trial to the people who follow closely, and maby 2/3 of the people who follow it somewhat closely. It would be REAL interesting to break down the other statistics based on how they answered this question.

Whats also freaky, is democrats where more likly to answer to not breakup microsoft, and that microsoft has benifited consumers. But yet, when asked weither they would support a regulation that would increase the price of software for consumers. 6% of democrats as compareed to 3% of republicans answered that they Strongly Support such regulation. (Though remember these polls have a 3% margin or error, so this could mean nothing.)
P.S. Not really trying to make a statement its just that the statistic suprised me, wanted to know what others though.

Mentioning keys, I noticed a very interesting comment by the judge. The fact that there may be some expressive content in the code should not obscure the fact that its predominant character is no more expressive than an automobile ignition key---it is simply a means, electronic in one case and mechanical in the other, of causing the machine with which it is used to function in a particular way. What I found really interesting is that accually this is a very good point, say a car company creates a very special type of car key, which requires a code to start the car (they accually do do this). And for a long time anyone (probably locksmith shops) who wants to make a copy has to buy a license for the technology of creating keys. Eventually someone figures out how to create the keys themselves. They are of course taken to court, as they have provided a measure to facilitate in someone stealing a car (most likly their own). For some reason, this is the best analogy I've heard of in a while.

Yes, of course, its always been possible to copy DVDs straight. But very few people do it, simply because of the cost. What CSS enforces is a few rules about playing (there may be more, I don't know)
    1. Region encoding, a movie sold in one part of the world can only be played by dvd players sold in stores in that same region. (I'm sure you can ship the players around, but that gets complicated) Same with many other countries. I don't know where the accual borders are set, but it creates problems for people trying to copy a cd and spread it across the world.
    2. CSS, only playback on industry specified players, by industry specified software. In other words, I couldn't just go into buisness making DVD players, I would have to get a license from DVD CCA. (I think this is a huge part of the deal, as its not patented or anything, if the CSS is in hte public domain, the licenses are no longer needed). Its about control people, pure and simple.

A color screen, even one the size of the palm, can easily run 15 watts. So the wattage of the processor doesn't play as heavily in this ballpark. I doupt the old palm processor ran much more than 5 watts, as it already ran at a low temperature. So the tradeoff wouldn't work all that well, but the increase in processor power definatly would be nice.
