I saw an email from a big four consultant who is in their Microsoft practice (specializes in Microsoft technology), which stated, "If you currently have or will have applications being built on Linux, to please involve Microsoft so that they can create/show a solution using Microsoft technology."
Of course my freind hasn't submitted any of the applications he is creating. But I imagine they are looking for the Java Petshop type app to compare.
This is really good for Chicago, my friend out in Naperville was laughed at when he wanted to order DSL. So he is the last one through the zone in EQ, on his dialup. Since he got ISDN (dual B channels) and a ISDN router, he is alot quicker. I hope Sprint takes off with this in Chicago.
It is also in CA, Seattle, Chi, and three other markets in New England (don't remember where). How long did it take you to get someone out there to hook it up after you ordered it?
What I have found with the wireless internet is that the provisioning and antena controlers are out of sync 20% of the time. People get de-provisioned becuase of the a faulty billing system, and then have to be reprovisioned by the call center.
I just finished that project out at Sprint 2 months ago. What is sad, is that the system was running on a Linux box, with the provisioning system running perl/php with MySQL. The consultants I was working with (one a USMC Lt. Col) decided that it would be better if it ran on a Sun Sparc station with C++, tied to an Oracle database. Its part of the Broadband wireless group there. Each city has a cybermanager that maintains connections to and from the antenea in 30 degree radian chunks. It has only been rolled out in six or seven markets, but I think its the way of the future.
What browser is the best open source soloution on Windows (can those two words exist in the same sentence???) that works? Ahhh the good old days of Netscape 1.0 on Trumpet Winsock with no IE on the radar screen *as he wipes a tear* those were the good old days!
They love college graduates from other countries, in my experience working for them this is what I have found:
1.) They promote non-American people faster, due to the leverage that they have with visa/green card status. Typically the American's have self-esteem and pride, which get in the way of managements control.
2.) It gives them a global look. "See if you need more consultants we can get qualified Java programmers from our Botswana Unit office!"
3.) They can pay them lower wages, and still look good in the employees eyes. "Your manager is making three times less than you, and doing twice the work, our profit margin has not looked so good at 66%."
I noticed this too, I have a butt load of Turbo Linux CD's laying around (drink coasters) since I use RedHat 6.1, I started with RedHat four years ago.
