  1. Re:If only it made sense.. on Patch To Allow Linux To Use Defective DIMMs · · Score: 1

I have a car that runs on 5 of it's 6 cylinders -- and it runs great. New Cadillacs with V8's have a feature that detects if a cylinder is bad and stops its' plugs from firing while the engine churns on. I have a hard drive with lots of bad sectors -- but they are marked bad and my box is stable. You can buy new harddrives in the same condition. Ever put a 450Mhz processor on a 400Mhz motherboard? You're throwing away 12% of your processing power but the machine will still run fine. Why is RAM any different? Sure, new 100% working RAM is better -- but if I found a 512M DIMM lying on the street -- and 448M still works -- I'm not gonna complain!!

Expand your expectations. Get *LOTS* of people together listen as they expand their expectations.

  3. Secure Systems are possible on Security: The Window of Exposure · · Score: 2

I believe that secure systems *ARE* possible. And when I say secure systems I mean ABSOLUTELY secure systems. A computer is a finite machine. There are only so many possible states my PC can ever be in. There are even less possibilities for my palmpilot. Granted it boggles the mind to contemplate EVERY possible state of a modern PC -- but the set *IS* finite. I repeat: IS FINITE.

Whether or not it is financially possible to create a 100% secure machine should not be cause to abandon the idea and leap towards compromise. A beautiful example, is of course, OpenBSD -- the pursuit of an absolutely secure system *DOES* result in a more secure system. I'd take OpenBSD out of the box over any commercial UNIX with all the vendors' "window-limiting" products any day!

If your goal is a secure system -- then it is possible (even if unlikely) to create a secure system! If you goal is something else (profit, chrome, popularity, enlightenment, whatever..) then it probably isn't. SO, if YOU are trying to create a secure system don't let someone with another goal get in your way! (accounting firms, authors, vendors, users, managers, whom/whatever)

There is nothing abstract about system security -- and intentionally abstracting it to liability management or limiting window time is a lie -- even though it may be a white one.

    They both suck.

Assuming the presidential debates actually take place:

Does anyone know how to contact whatever committee it is that runs them? Perhaps it'd be possible to suggest some questions dealing with the DMCA or even just more generic internet/copyright ideas.

It'd be nice to get some PRIME TIME answers from the presidential candidates. It'd also raise public awareness outside of the this arena.

Oh give me a break from the holier-and-loftier-than-thou crap.

This is a GNU pissing contest and nothing more.

Where are the GNU folks when people distribute BINARY ONLY (*GASP*) copies of their utilities linked to Solaris libs, or IRIX libs, or AIX libs.

They are just pissed because KDE/TrollTech beat them to the desktop arena.

Oh and about the BSD license.. not all *BSD distributions are based on 4.4LITE releases.

Now here is the tricky part:

How many of these people have been sued/burned/hogtied?

Sure KDE is a little cartoony looking but it runs well and is stable. Perhaps SOMEBODIES are jealous?

I really doubt I'll get burned for linking to something with a QPL License. I also really doubt I'll make it to the end of the day without my GNOME desktop crashing again.
