    At the University of Kansas, they had to install a furnice in the computer center after they got rid of their old VAXen and replaced them with Alpha stations. They used to use the excess heat from the VAXen to heat the building, but had to come up with an alternative heating source when those machines were decomissioned.

    Why do you say that? If you look at their most recent financial statements you will notice that Red Hat has never made a dime in profit.

    Because they make good hardware at a good price with great Windows drivers.

    I think you mean VC money, since RemarQ hasn't IPOd.

    Really, all it means is that the web as matured to the point where you just can't throw something up, try to attract a bunch of eyeballs, and then try to figure out how to build a business model later.

    Ad revenue based sites are always going to have trouble making it... look at Salon's problems recently (not that I can't think of anyone who doesn't deserve it more..) Look at the magazine industry.. Very high failure rate, pretty low profit margins.

    Maybe it's time to stop worrying about how to induce understandably apathetic Americans to vote and to simply start selling stock in the Corporate Republic itself.

    Well, you can't get equity, but you can buy debt if you want to invest in your country (too bad the returns are so-so. Of course, the risk is pretty much damn near zero too..).

    The fact that people still want whatever the work in question is shows that it still has some value, so why should the publisher / writer / whatever give up their rights to it?

    Even if the studios end up on the losing side, they just go play a couple rounds of golf and laugh about it over drinks. The defendants, on the other hand, will be stuck with hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees.

    I was under the impression that the EFF was representing the defendants.

    Does anyone who got a beta of the Visual Studio.net from the MS PDC have any idea on how this performs? I mean, its taken Sun several years to come up with a decent performing VM for Java, and the CRL for C# sounds like it may have similar issues (despite the fact they claim everything runs as native code). If there are substatial performance imporovements from Java, that would definitely be another reason to move toward C# development (the Everything is a COM object is pretty slick too).

    I think its interesting that the author of the article says C# has garbage collection like Java. I mean, wasn't LISP the first major language to have garbage collection?

    There is nothing inherantly wrong in being old and white, but the fact is that 90%+ of the wealth in this country is controlled by 1%- of the population all of whom are old and white and who are dead set on that money only going to more old white people when they die. And they are damned sure they don't want the government to have it, hell they would just give it to those disturbing poor people and then who would they get to clean their pools?

    Why should they want their money to go to anyone else? Why shoud the government get it? Hell, there are already horrible estate taxes levied when someone dies and has money, but I guess those aren't enough for you. I guess the concept of property rights bothers you for some reason... Why don't you move to North Korea, socialism has worked out wonderfully there....

    You seem to see no reason why one should protest the state's infinite wisdom.

    That's funny, I thought they were protesting at the Republican convention. Obviously, the protesters don't belive people should have opinions that differ with their own.

    You fail to understand the purpose of an anti-poverty coalition.

    No, I think I understand their purpose, I just think they are misguided. So I don't support them. What's wrong with that?

    Again, none of this is hatefull. I'm sure the word intollerent will get thrown out here pretty soon as well. That's typical for the left... Their big on tolerance for everything but people who disagree with them.

    I will have to admit that I am white with Republican leanings though... got me there...
