  1. Re:Time for my monthly troll on IDs For MO Drives To Counter Copyright Violations · · Score: 1

Maybe it's because I'm an old guy, but why are slashdotters so obsessed about their "right" to be able to steal copyrighted content?

    Answer 1: see my sig.

Answer 2: they've never created any art themselves, so they don't credit the blood-sweat-tears argument for IP ownership.

Answer 3: they ignore the fact that the creator should be able to control to a limited extent something that would not exist without them. DeCSS is OK, because deciding where the DVD is (not) viewable is wrong. It should be viewable wherever the hardware exists. MP3 is OK for similar reasons. Emailing MP3s to friends is OK, as the rough equivalent of tape swapping. Napster's users are wrong because they don't care whether the artist wants to be on it or not. Napster itself is just a sword: whether it does good or bad is dependent on those who wield it.

Answer 4: they don't remember the controversy over Voices of the Hellmouth. It's your post? Too bad, it wants to be free.

According to Dr. Dobb's Journal, 90% of shareware used is unregistered or bootlegged (Oct 2000, p. 124). The reason we're seeing ads in software now is because shareware didn't work well enough...

None, if the RIAA had their way. See also: copyright being extended just prior to Mickey Mouse becoming free. (Warning: reference came from /. and may be tainted.)

So? Everyone (even my .sig) knows that, they just won't acknowledge it.

Here's an idea... instead of free music, let's make a free code system. Having copies of code hosted all over the Net means that none is lost if SourceForge is destroyed in an earthquake or something. Anyone have a domain to throw at it? OpenNap has an GPL'ed Napster server and also conveniently maintains a list of clients on their page....

I'm not sure the point is to see everything in the first place. There is no way you can view all the content of the Internet in a single lifetime.

The problem comes when somebody is picking out the good hits from a search. They remember they want to go to fahrvergnügen.com, but they have no way to type the ü. Then what?

The new domain name system should be designed with the following key points in mind:

    1. Backwards compatibility.
    2. Backwards compatibility.
    3. Backwards compatibility.
Just because you want to have a domain with ü in it doesn't mean you have to implement it in such a way that I'm locked out. (Hmm, we could try escaping it with '\', as in \XXXXX\, where the X's are the Unicode character.) Just as the current system shouldn't lock out people who want to register with international characters.

As you said, web services and software might help, but how many clueless users are going to be able to find them? How many of those are going to bother? In the "Internet economy" everyone keeps blathering about, they'll go somewhere else. Then all your "the Internet is global" propaganda is worthless...
